Silence. The footsteps had stopped. I threw my hands to my mouth and held them there tightly, fighting to hold my breath in. The footsteps started again, each thump echoing in my skull, I slowly dropped my hands and breathed as quietly as I could, feeling for the bookshelves. I gripped onto a shelf and slowly stepped forward, using the shelf as a crutch.
Slowly, I made my way down the aisle, one hand on either side of me, swiping across the books so I'd know when I'd reached the end. The footsteps still sounded around me, sounding more frantic and rushed as time passed.
I went flying to the ground as my foot came into contact with a book I'd dropped earlier. Fuck. I scrambled to my feet and listened out. Everything was quiet. The silence was thick and an ominous dread rushed over me. I moved to look for the shelf again when a sight in my peripheral caused me to freeze. A white mask floated in the darkness. I could barely make out the robe's outline, but the sharp glint of the knife cut through the shadows.
I waited with bated breath, not daring to move in case they hadn't seen me. We stared each other down as if we were moments away from a duel in an old western. They stood as still as a statue and I the same.
Without warning, they sprinted towards me, mask bobbing rapidly in the darkness. I reacted a second too late and started sprinting away, only to be caught after a second with a tackle from behind. We both fell hard on the floor, Ghostface pinning me down until I elbowed them hard in the face and sent them flying backward.
I used all my might to crawl away, my back throbbing and my legs dead weight. I made it to the open space at the entrance of the library, my head a foot away from the front desk, when a rough hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me over. I lay on my back as Ghostface straddled me, pinning me to the ground once again, and raised their knife. I knew it was the end, but I couldn't stop the bloodcurdling scream from escaping.
Everything turned white and I squinted my eyes in pain. A deafening smash sounded to the right of me. I looked and the library was lit again, Ghostface was gone. Shards of glass flanked a window that had a gaping hole in it. They'd escaped.
'Dear God, are you alright hon? Did he hurt you?' The librarian stumbled toward me, a look of fear and awe in her eyes.

'You know, you don't have to go to that party right?' Sarah looked at me in the reflection of the mirror, pausing from drawing on her eyeliner for a second.
'Yeah, I know.' I replied, lying on her bed and reading through a book she'd lent me.
'You don't have to do everything Sam says, you need to do things you want to do as well.' Sam. It suited him so well. Sam. My mind swam with images of his deep, dark eyes. I could just melt in them.
'Y/N. Y/N!' I looked up to find Sarah staring at me. 'Where the hell did you go?'
'Ha, sorry. I don't know. Just thinking.' She looked at me quizzically.
'Well, okay. But, still, are you sure you want to go to this party after what happened today?'
'Sarah, I'm fine, please. Plus, it'll be nice to let loose a bit, I don't know.' Walking over to her wardrobe, I saw her watch me out of the corner of my eye, but I pretended I didn't see.
'Fine, but I'm not letting you out of my sight. I'm gonna be your bodyguard for the night.' She tapped me on the head with a pen and I mockingly shouted in pain, causing her to laugh. It was just like the night of the bonfire again, as we both laughed together until our stomachs hurt. I really hoped that was where the similarities in nights ended.
We set off from Sarah's house at half 6, as it took roughly half an hour to get to Sam's house. From what Sarah said, apparently, his house was big, and a little out of the way. His parents were loaded it turned out.
As we pulled up to the house, I was in awe. The landscape was beautiful and the house was an old-fashioned building sat atop a hill, overlooking a valley. The sun was setting and the auburn of the leaves on the trees made the atmosphere almost magical.
'Babe! You made it!' Sam came running out of the house as I stepped out of the car, wrapping his arm around my shoulder and guiding me to the door. I looked over my shoulder to see Sarah locking her car and looking defeated. I gave her a weak smile as the sound of loud music hit me like a tidal wave.
