"Only on live target."
He explains to me how to shoot an arrow. It, again, is a sad waste of an arrow. "Any questions?"
"When was the last time you say your roommate Rowan?"
"You mean the one that was killed by a monster?"
"No. The other one."
"..Harvest Festival. But his side of the room was cleared out this morning. He's always been off but the last few weeks he has been erratic." I nod. "What's up with you and Tyler?"
"I'm using him because I do not have the Uber app." Xavier laughs. I was not trying to be funny.
"Still, steer clear."
"Why? Because he's a normie?"
"Because him and his friends are assholes. They can't stand the kids from the school take up their town like the plague."
"My brother caught the plague. We planned the funeral right when we found out."
"They're snobs."
"Says the one whose life has been served to him on a silver platter."
"Hey, girls in glass house..."
"Should throw bigger stones." I pick up an apple and an arrow. I throw the apple in the air then shoot the arrow through it. I get a bullseye.
"Ouch."
The last stop I am willing to take on this list is beekeeping. This kid reminds me of Pugsly. I want to strangle him. "Are you interesting in the ancient art of bee keeping?" No. But I like it when they sting me. "Eugene. Eugene Ottinger."
"Thursday. Thursday Addams. Am I late or is it only you?" I ask as I shake his hand.
"Only me. No one understands how majestic bees are."
I've chosen my club. No people and a someone to manipulate. Perfect.
When I arrive back to the school I see Rowan leaving. I do not bother taking to him. Thing just follows him.
I impatiently wait for Thing to return. "How do you lose him in a bathroom with no windows?" The nuisances I need to deal with daily are aggravating.
None of this makes any sense. There is no way Thing could lose him that fast, but be able to spy on me for a few hour to a day. Something is going on here and I need to figure out what it is.
Just knowing I shouldn't be investigating these murders is my key inspiration to keep going. There is something about the unknown and forbidden that makes me want to dive in head first.
I am in Ms. Thornhill's class. Xavier is trying to impress me. These people and their parlor tricks. At home I sleep under a guillotine and hope it doesn't decapitate me. Nothing they can do can impress or scare me. A spider crawls off of his page. I smack the spider and it disintegrates into dust. Bianca and I have a standoff about ghost orchards. I wonder where she gets her red thumb from. Not that I even care.
"Enid."
"Yes, roomie?"
"I need you to go to the beehive for my club. I need to go back into the woods."
"Can't ask Thing?" I look at her, incredulously shocked. Thing hates colored much as I do. "Gave me a massage, we both opened up. He's mad and you need someone to cover for you. Just apologize."
"I don't do apologies. It is not my fault my family is cursed with a sensitive hand." Enid rolls her eyes at me.
I realize I won't get her to do what I want until I apologize with Thing. "I snapped I'm sorry." He doesn't seem thrilled. "What? Do you hand cream? Nail buffer?" Still nothing. I sigh. "I know I can be single-minded, stubborn, and obsessive. But those are all trails of a good writer." Thing responds. "Yes and serial killers."
