I finally convince Enid to go to the hive with me. Eugene is more than happy.
"This is more girls than I've ever had in the hive before! Not counting bees." I nod at him then leave. Eugene likes her. This will be more than torture for her, which is more than enough considering she made me apologize to Thing. I don't do apologies.
I meet Tyler in the woods. He didn't want Elvis, his dad's police dog to pick up on our scent. He used coffee grounds. "You must think it's so weird i'm stalking my dad."
"Not at all. I stalk my parents all the time." Tyler chuckles nervously and nods. He claims I'm not scary, but can't look me in the eye. He and I investigate the crime scene.
"What really happened? I won't tell my dad anything."
"I thought Rowan was in trouble. I was wrong, he flung me into a tree and choked me. Then the monster came and killed him."
"So the monster saved you? Why?"
"Why does you family think the monster stuck around to chat? I'm trying to figure it out myself."
Tyler nods and we continue to walk. "I knew it." Tyler looks at me undoubtedly confused. "Glasses." I scoff at his lack of knowledge. "They're Rowan's." I pat around for pockets. I pick them up and have a vision. I hate them, they're like electroshock therapy without the satisfying after burn.
Rowan is yelling and throws Xavier against a wall. He has a thing for that. I see the same book as last time. I see him going to kill me the first time and the picture.
"You okay?" He caught me before I was able to hit the ground.
"I keep seeing the same book." He doesn't get it. "Hold these."
"Why?" I hand the glasses to him.
"This uniform doesn't have pockets." He mouths the word 'oh'. He smirks as he places them into his pant pocket. "Stop smirking."
"You're disturbed."
"I am not disturbed. I am disturbing." His lips go into a tight line and he nods.
He brings me back to the school. He gives me back the glasses and I put them on the waistband of my uniform. No one will see them.
I retrieve Thing and go to the library. I encounter two vampires being worse than my parents. I will need to bleach my eyes. They leave and Thing exists my bag. He points to a book with a purple spine. "The book was darker. Like a day old contusion. Keep looking."
Ms. Thornhill comes down the steps and Thing hides. "Oh Thursday! Hi! I can't believe you're actually looking for a book. Most people come down here to hook up."
"I walked in on two vampires.. fanging."
"Is there anything I can help you with?"
"Actually yes." I show her a paper with the symbol I've seen on the book. "Have you seen this marking before?"
"I think it's for an old student society. The Nightshades."
"Like the deadly flower. Color me intrigued."
They disbanded years ago. That was no help.
With no luck I venture outside. Enid is crying. "Thursday. I need you. Yoko is sick I need a co-pilot."
"No."
"We'll be going up against Bianca. No rules."
I reluctantly give in. I love no rules. I want to make Bianca taste her defeat so badly it burns her throat. One thing that wasn't mentioned was dressing up. At least I'm not wearing whiskers or pink.
The race begins. It's a rocky start, when we do make it to the other side Enid stays in the boat. I run into the woods. When I touch the building the flags are on I black out.
I see the past. I see fire and someone who looks like me. It's all so confusing and I can't get my head around it.
When I finally wake up I see Bianca "Taking a catnap?" I groan and grab the flag then run.
I hop in the boat and we start rowing. The clowns start to sink. Enid clawed out the bottom of their boat. I was mildly impressed. We're catching up to Bianca, and she is trying to throw us off course. We make her boat sink with arrows that come out of the sides of our boat.
We win the Poe Cup. The look on Bianca's face makes this outrageous outfit worth it. The win is celebrated and everyone who doubted me is proven wrong. That always will be.
The smiles that I keep getting unsettle me. So I hide. Enid convinces me to go hang out with our winning team. Weems spots me off to the side. "You know Thursday, the last time Ophelia Hall won is when your mother was captain. I was her co-pilot." I scoff. "Maybe you two are more alone than you would like to admit."
"We have the same blood. That's it." Weems sighs. I go back to the dorm. I'm done with people for today.
I go to my typewriters and begin to type. Nevermore continues to be an enigma. A place where question far outweigh the answers. But sometimes the answer is staring you right in the face.
I quick thought leads me to the Edgar Allen statue. I go to the book that he is holding in his hand. He has always been one for riddles, but this is his best one yet. Each line, it's a new one.
The opposite of moon. Sun.
A world between ours. Nether.
Two months before June. April.
A self-seeding flower. Pansy.
One more than one. Two.
Its leaves weep to the ground. Willow.
It melts in the sun. Ice.
Its beginning and end never found. Circle.
Every rule has one. Exception.
The answer will give a shark cracking sound.Snap.
I snap twice. The statue begins to move.
