"But what about what you want?", I gently pressed. "Doesn't your voice matter too?"
Pacifica paused, her gaze finding mine. A flicker of vulnerability crossed her features as she seemed to ponder the question. Just as she was about to respond, Mabel's voice pierced through the air."Y/N!", Mabel exclaimed, her face lit up with excitement. "There you are! We've been looking everywhere for you."
My gaze flickered briefly towards Pacifica, who had already started walking away. Before I could say anything, Mabel grabbed my hand and pulled me inside the opulent venue."Mabel.", I protested, "I was sort of in the middle of something."
Suddenly, the mansion's doors opened, and Dipper barged back in into the party, pointing accusingly at Preston. "Northwests! You've got some explaining to do!"Pacifica's surprise was evident as she exclaimed, "Dipper, you came back!" But Dipper's expression was serious, filled with anger. He shot a glare at Pacifica, his tone filled with accusation. "You lied to me! All of you did! All you had to do was let the townsfolk into the party, and you could have broken the curse. But instead, you made us do your dirty work!"
My gaze flicked towards Pacifica, who looked guilty but remained silent. "Is that true, Pacifica?"
Pacifica avoided my gaze, her expression filled with guilt. "I..." She hesitated, her voice barely a whisper. "I should've told you, but..."I couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. I had hoped that things with Pacifica would turn out to be different, but it seemed that the pressures of her environment had still influenced her actions.
Preston stepped forward, towering over Dipper. "Look at who you're talking to, boy. I'm hosting a party for the most powerful people in the world. You think they'd come here if they had to rub elbows with your kind?"
Dipper's glare intensified, undeterred by Preston's intimidation tactics. "My kind?" He shot a disapproving gaze at Pacifica. "I was right about you all along. You're just as bad as your parents. Another link in the world's worst chain!"
Pacifica opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything, Preston rang a small bell. She flushed and stepped back, her gaze dropping to the floor."Enjoy the party.", Preston continued, his tone laced with dismissiveness. "It's the last time you and your kind will ever come here."
A chimpanzee servant offered a tray of finger food to Dipper, but Preston quickly interjected. "No, no! Those aren't for him."
Dipper let out a frustrated scoff and stormed away, leaving a tense silence in his wake.I turned around, hoping to gauge Mabel's reaction to the confrontation, but she was nowhere in sight. Frustrated, I cursed silently under my breath. "Dammit, Mabel.", I muttered, raking a hand through my hair. "Where the hell did she go now?"
I eventually spotted her at the buffet next to another guest. A boy her age. I overheard Mabel's attempt at initiating a conversation.
"Hi! I'm Mabel.", she chirped. "So, Australia, huh? Do you guys eat kangaroo meat over there, or are they... strictly pets?"
I couldn't help but chuckle at her awkward attempt. I silently mouthed 'Mabel, no' to myself, shaking my head in disbelief. As the boy responded that he was from Austria, not Australia, I facepalmed, groaning quietly under my breath. This was painful. Could somebody please help her?
As Candy joined the conversation, I groaned inwardly. The girls' flirtation attempts were so transparent, it was cringeworthy."Oh, Mabel, you hopeless disaster."
I took the opportunity to sneak away from this scene and find a quieter corner of the party.
I found a secluded spot on the mansion's rooftop terrace, away from the noise and commotion of the party below. The chill night air provided a welcomed relief from the cramped and stuffy atmosphere inside. I leaned against the stone railing, taking a deep breath and admiring the star-filled sky above.
