Chapter Five: A Night Meeting with Prince Duan

The head maid sneaked to the back door of the bedchamber, asking a familiar maid for information. The maid whispered, "The emperor let Consort Yu in."

Head Maid: "..."

What was this about? Summoning two concubines at the same time, was the emperor planning something strange?

Yu Wanyin sat beside him, and a maid promptly served a cup of hot tea. The maid's fingers trembled slightly, but Yu Wanyin, preoccupied, didn't notice.

Xiahou Dan dismissed the maid and watched as Yu Wanyin took the truth serum from her sleeve, mixing it into the hot tea.

Yu Wanyin: "Remember to make her drink it."

Satisfied that the powder had completely dissolved, she placed the tea on a small table by the emperor's bed.

As she turned to leave, the maid from earlier emerged from a corner, looking terrified at the tea.

Consort Yu not only avoided drinking it but also planned to make Xie Yong'er drink it? Had she figured out the contraceptive plan? Impossible; the drug was hard to detect, even if completely ingested.

Or maybe, Consort Yu was cunning enough to guess the Empress Dowager's intentions and decided to let Xie Yong'er take the fall?

The maid had secrets the head maid could use against her, leaving her no choice but to comply. Fearing failure, she nervously approached and picked up the tea.

Yu Wanyin returned to the hall to wait with Xiahou Dan. As night fell and Xie Yong'er was expected, she said, "I'll hide in the side chamber to avoid suspicion. When the drug takes effect, call me."

Yu Wanyin hid behind a screen in the side chamber, and the maid quickly brought snacks. She dismissed the staff and relaxed, munching on seeds.

Xie Yong'er arrived gracefully and greeted the emperor.

Xie Yong'er followed him humiliatingly towards the dragon bed deep in the bedchamber. Xiahou Dan sat on the bed, pointed at the cup of tea on the table with his pale finger, and uttered one word, "Drink."

Here it was, the contraceptive potion that Yu Wanyin mentioned. Xie Yong'er, eager to drink it, picked it up and gulped it down in one go.
