Act Twenty Five: Engulfed

Start from the beginning

Relief washed over my body, but it didn't erase the lingering nervousness of that future conversation. With my new dress held close, my attention drifted to the table not far off in the garden, collectively filled with the guests I requested attendance.
Right, it would be best to spend some time with all the people I invited.
"Pardon me then, we can speak more later," With a short nod and farewell to my new parents, I let myself step away. The mortician didn't follow right away, allowing me some time with the people I could consider my friends.
"(Y/N)!" The familiar Soma waved out warmly, "Come sit with us!"
It was nice to see he was in happy spirits, at least.
Looking among the group, I took a seat beside Ciel and set the dress upon my lap to keep out of the way. The younger boy curtly nodded, but said nothing to my arrival. Always so cold and distant, what in the heavens was he thinking about? Sebastian stood behind him like a shadow, but unlike his master, the dark man gave a smile,
"That's quite a fine bit of cloth there. Dare I say it rather suits you?"
"Sebastian-" Ciel started, but I let myself cut him off. I didn't mind the comment, at any rate.
"'Thank you. It's not a traditional color, but I rather like it."
"Indeed," The butler continued, "Black is bad luck at weddings, it's the color of death, after all. But you do reside at the parlor."
Couldn't have said it better myself...
Better than ivory, at least.
Wait, could it be... That black ribbon they gifted to me-

From across the table, Alois suddenly cleared his throat,
"Forgive, I don't mean to interrupt, but... I want to congratulate you! And also thank you, for giving me an excuse to have some fun away from the dull manor," The boy smiled warmly my way. I almost didn't invite Alois, seeing how we had only spoken once, but he was a great help to me. It was easy to track him down with his nobility status, but even I was surprised he accepted the invite. Ciel didn't even look the blond's way when he spoke, but Alois didn't seem to mind or even notice, "So you're turning twenty now? That's a big deal! And getting married soon, you're so lucky. It sounds so romantic."
"Weddings always make me cry," Soma tacked on, "I can not wait for it, you will invite me, will you not, (Y/N)?"
What a ridiculous question,
"Of course I will," Did he even have to ask? He was essentially my best friend! "There's a lot to think about, but dare I say, I hardly imagine I'll want something customary these days."

With a sigh, Ciel took a long sip of his tea before setting it down. When he looked my way, the young Earl's sapphire eyes sharply glistened,
"Well, that's not surprising. That prick of yours did it in, or is it the choice in spouse now?"
"What do you mean by that?" Soma chimed up before I could respond. Yeah, what did he mean? "Is there something wrong with (Y/N)'s selection?"
A hint of irritation prickled at my skin at the idea of an oncoming insult. I was prepared to defend the reaper but bit my tongue, allowing Ciel to explain his words first.
The boy was silent a moment more before meeting the prince's gaze,
"Oh, nothing. He's just not very conventional, now is he? Why, working with the dead and such."
How did he know-!
No, Ciel meant the funeral parlor, didn't he? There's no way he would know such a secret. I attempted to shake away the initial irritation and give a warm smile,
"Well, I've never been a conventional lady either. Perhaps that is why we get along so well."

The answer looked to satisfy Ciel and Soma, but Alois still shifted with discomfort. It took him a moment, but eventually, his bright blue eyes rose to face my way,
"(Y/N), the others said you had a previous fiance. He died, yes?"

In the most... Polite way, perhaps,
"An unfortunate accident."
It was still difficult deep down to accept that I had killed someone. Even if he deserved it, why was it my hands that had to stain red? What made it so fair that I had to instead of anyone else? I couldn't fault the reapers and their divine rules but it was still frustrating. The swirling feelings that twisted in my gut would take much longer to free my conscience.
"Is that so? Don't tell me you buried that scum at the church." The venom in Ciel's voice made no attempt to keep itself hidden. Had I forgotten to tell them what I did?
With things happening so quickly, perhaps it simply slipped my mind.
