˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ So far, summer had been pretty quiet.

Dustin left for science camp at the end of May and is getting home tomorrow, so summer will definitely get louder after he comes back.

Regarding Kat's job, she had two other coworkers, technically her employees, working with her at the Scoops Ahoy in the Starcourt Mall, who were also forced to wear a sailor themed outfit and hat.

One was a girl in her grade she didn't know that well, Robin Buckley. Robin was loud, quick witted, and a hard worker, even though she could get off task easily.

Her other coworker was none other than Steve Harrington. Stupid, King Steve Harrington. If she had any say, she wouldn't have hired him, but it turned out that she doesn't call all the shots.

At the beginning of summer, Kat had little to no patience for him. Seriously, how hard was it to use a cash register? But as she was forced to spend hours with him every day for a month, she had started to loosen up around him. She definitely wouldn't go as far as to say they're friends, but it was safe to say that Kat's hate for Steve had lessened since the beginning of summer. She still caught herself rolling her eyes at his dumb questions or his trying to flirt with customers, though. She didn't know the right word for their dynamic. The best she could come up with was acquaintances with a side of friendful banter.

As it turned out, Robin was a great person to make fun of Steve with, as she would lean into every joke Kat made, making a ton of jokes herself, too.

This night in particular, it felt longer than any other night. It was a Friday, so it was busy as usual, but as each minute stretched by, Kat had wondered where Dustin's friends were.

Almost every Friday, they would convince one of the three older teens to let them sneak into the movie theater through the back hallways of Scoops. The first few times that happened, Kat couldn't have been more against it, but as they kept coming back, she let it slide.

Kat was sitting in the back room reading when Robin called from the front, "Hey, dingus, your children are here!"

Steve sighed as he opened the sliding windows that open to the front. "Again? Seriously?" All the kids come through the back, Steve yelling at them to hurry up in his usual abrasive tone.

It was only a few minutes later as Kat was in the front with Steve when all the lights flickered, then shut off. Kat looked outside of the shop, seeing that all the lights in the food court were also out.

"That's weird." Steve frowned, flicking the light switch over and over, but nothing happened.

Kat stared at him. "That's not gonna work," she finally said. "It's electrical power. When the distribution grid is shut down, it's mostly because of an overload of energy, so it'll shut off any power attached to that until the main distributor turns back on."

"Oh, yeah?" Steve said, flicking it faster and faster. Obviously, the lights didn't turn back on. He went on for almost thirty seconds until the lights finally came back on. Steve gave Kat a smug smile. "Let there be light."

Kat glanced to the rest of the mall, seeing that all of the other lights came back on, also. "Didn't know that one light switch was connected to the entire mall," she said, grabbing her scooper and rolling her eyes.

Steve went back to the cash register, mindlessly clicking buttons, giving a small look to Kat each time he pressed the wrong one to make sure she didn't notice.

It was hard for her not to notice when the machine started beeping and the drawer got stuck halfway open. Kat let him struggle for a moment, pressing her lips together so she wouldn't laugh. "Press cancel," she finally told him.

Steve quietly mocked her while pressing cancel.

The night was completely uneventful after the power outage, Kat read in the back room while Steve flirted with customers and Robin made fun of him. Just a normal night.

They weren't prepared for what they were about to find out.
