~Enemies to... Lovers?~

~Betrayal, Chapter 16~

"Excellent." Fintan's face was emotionless for a second, and then he turned to me. "I hope you'll be more useful than your boyfriend. You are the centerpiece to the ashes of this scheme. And he is the spark. So, I have a little bit of a test."

He snapped his fingers, and a ball of Everblaze appeared in his hand. He stared at it lovingly, and then turned back to Sophie. "Use the power of stellarlune against him, otherwise he'll be dead by sunset." The sun was already sinking.

"I never agreed to hurt him." I said firmly.

"There is no agreement in starting over. You just do it. And then you see what amazing civilization rises, and which falls." He said. He leaned closer and whispered, "Also, it won't hurt him. It will fix him. Remember the plan. Stick to it."

This was another part of the plan. I was told to act like this could hurt him, when really... I would be rebooting his abilities. He would end up with just empathy.

I rallied my concentration, but before I could release it, a zap of blue flew across the pasture. Smoke rose, and when it faded, Lady Gisela stood there, smoothing her blonde hair as she inspected her nails. Then she looked up and met me in the eyes.

"You are not going to interfere with my son's stellarlune." She demanded.

"Oohhh, this is about to get spicy." Another voice said. Glimmer.

"Hello, traitor." Fintan and Gisela said in unison.

"Yes, yes, I've arrived." Another voice said. It was Gethen. His smirk made me want to barf. Everyone was in a circle. A circle of Neverseen, almost.

"Why do we have so many enemies?" Grady grumbled. Edaline looked so worried that she turned completely pale.

"Oh, I'm not an enemy." Glimmer assured us. "But I have some beef with Gisela, so I suggest you all cover your eyes before things get bright."

"No." Fintan whispered. It was so quiet, but it made everyone freeze.

"Sophie, listen to me." Gisela ushered. I glanced over at her. "Stellarlune is part of who Keefe is. If you take it away, he'll die. I can't have him die before my plan completely falls into place."

"Like I care about your stupid plan." I snapped.

"Sophie." I turned to Glimmer. "Kill her. She's manipulating you."

"Am I?" Gisela asked.

"Now I see where you get your dumb questions from." I whispered to Keefe. He smiled sadly.

"Why are you doing this?" Keefe whispered.

"I'm doing it for you. You have to trust me. Please." I begged. Keefe's eyes flashed with understanding.

"Oh, yes, Sophie, I see what you truly desire." Gethen whispered. I put a high wall around my mind. Shoot, he had read my thoughts again!

Gethen glanced at Keefe. He whistled loudly. For a second, nothing happened. Then two giant alicorns flew in from the sky.

Not alicorns. Not Silveny and Greyfell.

These were black pegasai. And they looked beyond evil.

Fintan sighed. "Well, I really should be going, with my most powerful elf mistress. We will release the full power of stellarlune on the boy later. We should dominate the world in a couple of days, at the most..." He glanced at me. "Right, Foster?"

I could see the pure rage in Keefe's eyes. He turned to me. "I trust you, Sophie. Just... Finish this. Not for me, but for everyone else. Don't worry about me. I'm gonna get you out of this."

If only he knew that wasn't possible.

Despite all the danger Keefe was going to have to fight (black pegasai, pretty much all of our enemies, etc) I didn't fight it when Fintan dragged me away. I couldn't help because the Empathy was consuming me again. My eyes changing colors wasn't the end of this condition. I wouldn't be able to get out of this situation or fix the world. Because I would be dead before any of that was possible. And I could never tell Keefe.
