I have to make sure that Ethan's name stays out of it otherwise they’ll suspect him.

I shake my head. “No, I didn’t think anything was wrong. I just… wanted to get away.”

He studies me for a moment, then asks, “What about your drink? Did you have anything there that could have been tampered with?”

I look up at him confused as I shake my head. “No, I just met my friend. I did not eat or drink anything.”

The officer frowns once again, cutting something off from his clipboard.

“Are you sure you didn't eat or drink anything? At all?” He asks once again.

I think of a lie before an idea goes off in my head.

“Yes, I'm sure… but now that I think about it, I did drink water when I got to my car.”

He gives me a nod before once again writing on the board.

“What bottle did you drink from? Can we find it in your car?”

My breath bates as I hurriedly think of an answer.

“I drank from a disposable bottle and I threw it away in a nearby garbage can because I don't like my car dirty.”
The officer once again writes something on the clipboard and looks me over with an arched brow, looking skeptical.

“And your friend, did they arrive before you or after?”

“After. I was doing my normal shift, Officer.”

I can feel his doubt, the way his eyes narrow slightly, the skepticism in his tone. My heart pounds faster as panic begins to settle in.

I bite my lip, lowering my gaze to the table. My hands start to tremble just a little, enough for him to notice. I force my breathing to hitch like I’m barely holding it together.

“I swear, I don’t remember how it happened,” I say, letting my voice tremble slightly. “I would never do something like that… not on purpose.”

The officer watches me closely, his expression unreadable. I make sure my gaze drops, blinking back the welling tears.

I know I’m walking a fine line, but I need him to believe me. This situation is already a mess.

He sighs, leaning back in his chair. “Look, we’re just trying to get the facts straight. If you can’t remember, we’ll have to investigate further, but it’ll help if you’re honest with us.”

“I don’t know how this happened,” I repeat, letting my voice waver.

He exhales slowly, his pen pausing over his notebook.

“Alright, take it easy,” he says, his tone more gentle now. “We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

I nod, blinking away the tears as I ask, “Can I please go home? I'm scared.”

The officer frowns before he nods.

“Oh, I forgot to mention. Your phone was ringing repeatedly so we answered it. The person is coming over, he said he’s your guardian.”

   Daniel?

But why was he calling me?

Is he okay? He never calls me.

A new wave of nervousness stabs me in the guts. He has to be okay.

“...He should be here in a few minutes.” The officer continues.
