Chapter 56 Sabotage

Start from the beginning

By the end of the day, Bai Xiying didn't go to find Mu Muqing again; she seemed to have resigned herself to her fate.

As she was about to leave, while bending down to pick something up, her hand slipped and she grasped a small black object. Once outside the building, she slipped the miniature camera into her backpack and took a taxi home.

Inside the car, Bai Xiying's spirits lifted; she no longer looked like the exhausted shell of herself from the hurricane studio.

She got out in front of her apartment complex and coincidentally ran into Lin Xingzhu returning from outside.

Lowering the car window, Lin Xingzhu signaled, "Need a ride?"

Bai Xiying didn't refuse.

Once inside the car, she asked, "Did you go to the police station again today?"

Lin Xingzhu sighed lightly. "Yeah, I just took Jiang Yeyu to the hospital for a check-up this morning, then stopped by to see Sister Xie."

At this, she raised her eyebrows and looked at Bai Xiying. "Sister Xie has been thinking about you, asking how you are and if you're hurt."

Bai Xiying inquired, "What did you say?"

Lin Xingzhu shrugged. "What could I say? Naturally, I told her you're doing fine."

But it was clear that Xie Yunya had some interest in Bai Xiying. Though relieved to hear that, the hidden disappointment in her eyes was hard to miss.

But obviously, compassion for a rival is cruelty towards oneself.

Even if Lin Xingzhu noticed, she didn't say a word about suggesting that Bai Xiying visit her another day.

Bai Xiying smiled. "Sister Xie should be fine, right?"

Before Lin Xingzhu could respond, Bai Xiying answered her own question. "She should be fine."

Last night, she had glanced over and saw that Xie Yunya didn't seem to have any external injuries. She looked like she hadn't suffered any serious trauma.

That was enough.

Bai Xiying coldly thought that in this lifetime, having been reborn, she had reduced the time Xie Yunya was missing to just a few days, rescuing her in time and ensuring she didn't endure any torment. Thus, her debt of kindness was settled.

From now on, they were even.

As for visiting her in the hospital? Bai Xiying hadn't even considered it.

Her unusual indifference was hard to conceal, and Lin Xingzhu could easily see through it.

Bai Xiying's coldness toward Mu Muqing could be understood; she disliked Mu Muqing because the latter had kept pursuing her. Bai Xiying loathed Qiao Zijing because of the latter's ill intentions and attempts to harm her.

But why was Bai Xiying so indifferent toward Xie Yunya, who had just escaped danger?

Clearly, they had gotten along well in university, and Xie Yunya was gentle, with no past conflicts or arguments. All signs pointed to the fact that Bai Xiying had no reason to treat Xie Yunya this way, yet she did.

It was as if overnight, Xie Yunya had become a stranger unworthy of her attention.

Lin Xingzhu exhaled, suppressing her various doubts deep in her heart. She felt she was on the verge of uncovering the truth.

She redirected the conversation back to the beginning. "I went to the police station. There was quite a scene yesterday. Everyone who had been kidnapped on the eighteenth floor was released one by one, and the police are helping to contact their families."

Bai Xiying turned to observe her expression, realizing things were clearly more complicated than they seemed.

Sure enough, Lin Xingzhu's brow furrowed as she continued, "But only those people were released. The 'Moonlit Night'—the underground space where those performers were, as well as the people we saw on that so-called menu—are all missing."

Bai Xiying sensed something.

"It's not that they've disappeared," Lin Xingzhu stated calmly. "The police said the investigation can only go this far."

Bai Xiying pressed, "Not even with your influence?"

"Not at all."

Among those rescued yesterday, only Jiang Yeyu had a slightly stronger background, and even with Lin Xingzhu's family's connections, they could only manage to rescue those people.

The rest were either beyond her reach or the Lin family's.

"It seems the situation is quite deep," Bai Xiying remarked.

Lin Xingzhu rubbed her brow. "Yeah, and it's clear that this isn't just a case of rich people causing trouble."

Only collusion among the powerful could lead to such unchecked dominance in a prosperous city like A.
