Harry smiled softly, but she could tell he was also weighing the options. "What are you most worried about, Nomes? You think we'll be disappointed if we find out now?"
Naomi hesitated, her fingers tracing the edge of the envelope. "I'm worried... that you'll be disappointed."
Harry blinked, sitting up a little straighter. "Me?"
Naomi nodded slowly, unable to meet his eyes. "I don't know, you've always talked about how you'd teach a boy to play football, how you'd do all the dad things with him... I guess I just think you'd be let down if it's a girl."
There was a pause, and then Harry laughed—soft at first, but soon he was full-on chuckling, making Naomi frown in confusion.
"Oi, what's so funny?" she asked, feeling a little annoyed now.
Harry wiped his eyes, his grin wide. "Naomi, come on. You really think I'd care if it's a girl? I'm going to love that kid no matter what. Boy, girl—it doesn't matter."
Naomi opened her mouth to respond but found herself lost for words. "I... I thought you wanted a boy."
Harry shook his head, still smiling. "I mean, yeah, I've talked about it, but that doesn't mean I'd be upset if it's a girl. You're overthinking this, love."
Naomi's cheeks flushed, and she dropped her gaze back to the table. "I guess I have."
Harry reached over and took her hand again, his touch warm and reassuring. "We're going to be great parents either way, and this kid's going to have everything they need—whether they like football or not."
Naomi smiled at that, squeezing his hand. "Alright. So... do we open it?"
Harry paused, glancing at the envelope. "Well, I mean, it's right here. But if you want to wait, we can."
Naomi bit her lip, her stomach fluttering with nerves. "I don't know, Harry. What if we open it, and it changes things?"
Harry raised an eyebrow. "How would it change things?"
Naomi shrugged helplessly. "I don't know! It just feels like once we know, it's... real. Like, really real."
"It's already real, Nomes. You're literally carrying a baby," he pointed out with a grin.
Naomi laughed, rolling her eyes. "I know, but still. Once we know, we're committing to it. No more 'what ifs.'"
Harry considered that for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Okay, I see your point. But... maybe it would be nice to know. So we can start imagining what our little nugget will be like."
Naomi sighed again, her eyes flicking back and forth between the envelope and Harry. "You really don't mind either way?"
"I really don't," Harry said firmly. "But I'll follow your lead. If you're not ready, we wait."
Naomi sat quietly for a moment, her heart pounding. Then, slowly, she reached for the envelope, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked it up.
"I think... I think I'm ready," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Harry's eyes lit up with excitement, but he kept his voice gentle. "Alright, love. Whenever you're ready."
Naomi held the envelope in her hands, staring down at it as if it might explode. Her heart raced, and as much as she wanted to know, her hands felt frozen. Her nerves were getting the best of her, a mixture of excitement and fear holding her back.
But she couldn't bring herself to tear it open.
She swallowed hard and, without saying a word, handed the envelope over to Harry. "You do it," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I... I can't."
Harry looked at her, surprised, but took the envelope from her hands with a gentle smile. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice soft and understanding.
Naomi nodded, biting her lip as she wrapped her arms around herself. "I'm too nervous. I don't know why."
Harry didn't press her any further. He turned his attention to the envelope, carefully tearing it open while Naomi's eyes squeezed shut. She couldn't watch. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest, and every second felt like an eternity.
There was silence for a moment, the sound of the paper unfolding filling the air. Naomi held her breath, her stomach flipping with nerves.
Then, after what felt like forever, she heard Harry exhale softly. His voice was gentle, filled with awe as he spoke the word that would change everything.
"It's a girl."
Naomi's eyes snapped open, and she stared at him, her mind barely processing the words. "A girl?" she whispered, her voice shaky.
Harry looked up from the paper, his grin wide and bright. "Yeah, Nomes. We're having a little girl."
Naomi's breath caught in her throat. A girl. They were having a daughter. Tears welled up in her eyes, but before she could say anything, Harry swept her into his arms, holding her tightly.
"We're having a girl!" he said again, his excitement bubbling over. He spun her around, lifting her slightly off her feet before setting her back down gently.
Naomi clung to him, tears slipping down her cheeks as the reality of it all sunk in. "You're not disappointed," she asked, her voice trembling.
"Disappointed?" Harry pulled back just enough to look at her, his hands cupping her face. "Nomes, we're having a baby! A little girl! I couldn't be happier."
Naomi let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding, her heart swelling with relief. "You're really happy?"
"I'm over the moon, love. Our little nugget... our nuggette." His voice was filled with warmth and certainty as if he'd already pictured their future.
Naomi wiped her eyes, laughing softly through her tears. "I don't know why I was so nervous."
Harry kissed her forehead, wrapping his arms around her again.
Naomi smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. In this moment, all her fears faded away.
Naomi stayed wrapped in Harry's arms, the weight of the moment sinking in. They were having a daughter—a little girl. It felt unreal.
Still standing in the kitchen, Harry pulled her a little closer, his hands resting on her waist as they swayed gently in the quiet. No music, just the soft sound of their breathing.
Naomi rested her head on his chest, her bump pressing softly against him. She smiled, her heart full, content in the silence. Everything felt right—just them, and their baby.
"We're really doing this," Harry whispered.
Naomi smiled, her voice tender. "Yeah. We are."
They swayed a little longer, wrapped in the quiet promise that together, they had everything they needed.
AUTHORS NOTE
Literally screaming at how adorable they are. Almost didn't include the end section of them swaying in the kitchen but I felt like it had to be there.
Oh and, we are officially HALFWAY through Harry and Naomi's journey! Only 9 more chapters remain, so buckle up.
This chapter was so fun to plan and write, probably the most enjoyable one I've written so far. Hope you guys enjoyed it, and again, as always,
Hate isn't welcomed, but constructive criticism is.
