He didn't reply, and desperately, I asked, "I-Is it true that you're l-leaving?"
His lips moved but not a word came out of his mouth. He was looking in my direction but he wasn't looking at me.
"Please tell me you're not." I begged, a tear landing on my left cheek.
I didn't care how weak I sounded. I tried to read any reaction on his face but he avoided my eyes.
"What about our goals?" My voice cracked and he looked at me.
I hated that apologetic look on his face. He was truly not here to stay. My eyes swelled up again, a fresh bale of tears coming out.
"Please say something," I moved away from the wall in a desperate attempt to get him talk but my legs failed me.
I didn't fall. He caught me.
I liked how safe I felt in his arms but this time, his body was tense. He avoided looking at me.
"Lilith I....I..." He struggled with what to say. I slowly turned his jaw to my right so that he'd look at me.
It was only for five seconds and it hurt. I walked out of his arms, feeling more empty than ever.
"What were you planning to do when your time here was over?" I found the courage to ask, when he remained quiet.
"Leave me without a word? Break up with me?" I didn't hide my tears from him.
He took an hesitant step ahead, his face in what I could have interpreted as anguish before, but now, I couldn't tell.
"Of course not. I-I..." He made an attempt to reach for my arm but I turned away.
"Then why didn't you say anything? Why did you keep me in the dark?" I tried to hear something from him, despite knowing that everything was confidential.
"I couldn't... it's prohibited." I ignored his explanation. It felt pretentious to me.
I don't think I could believe any of the words he would say to me now.
"Please believe me Lilith. It was out of my control." He pleaded with me but my already crumbled heart paid him no mind.
"So you chose to lie to me?" I didn't like how he was trying to justify himself.
He had lied.
I could see the shame on his face. The defeated look on his face wasn't supposed to affect me but it did.
"At least tell me the concern you had for me was real," I needed to know. I wanted an assurance from him.
I waited for a response but instead of hearing his voice, majestic steps came from the far end of the quiet hallway.
I met his eyes first, still waiting for an answer, before I looked at the men walking towards us.
Their steps were large, they seemed to be in a rush. Seeing how Enzo's shoulders tensed, he knew they were coming for him.
Dr Vurner, Dr Marlin and two guards made their way towards us.
I glanced at Enzo again, hoping that he'd say something but he kept his lips intact until the men came to us.
"We have a suspect." Dr Vurner interrupted without acknowledging me.
"It's time to take action." His firm gaze settled on Enzo. They weren't even trying to hide it from me.
It's like it didn't matter anymore. I turned to watch Enzo nod, as he exchanged another glance with Dr Marlin.
The two guards walked past us and then Enzo turned to me. He seemed conflicted. I knew he was supposed to follow those guards for whatever case they were after, but he didn't move.
