Chapter Fifteen: Shadows of the Dead

Start from the beginning

At last, they reached the RV, the last few stragglers piling inside as Dale slammed the door shut, sealing them in. Everyone was panting, their faces drawn and pale, the weight of the close call sinking in. Outside, the walkers continued to press against the RV, their hands smearing blood on the windows as they tried to claw their way in.

The survivors sat in silence, each of them processing the terror they'd just faced, the knowledge that nowhere was safe.

Alyssa sat beside Rick, her breathing ragged, her gaze fixed on the floor as she tried to steady herself. She'd never been this close to death, had never felt it breathing down her neck so intimately. But as she looked around at the faces of the others—people she barely knew, but who had fought as one to survive—she felt a strange, fierce sense of belonging, of connection.

Rick placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, his gaze meeting hers with a mixture of pride and relief. "You did good, Alyssa," he murmured, his voice soft but firm. "You're strong. Remember that."

Alyssa nodded, swallowing back the lump in her throat as she allowed herself to feel, for the first time, that she wasn't alone. Not in this camp, not in this fight. And as she leaned into the warmth of her father's presence, she realized that, despite the terror, despite the loss and fear, she might finally have found a place where she belonged.

Alyssa's heart pounded as she caught sight of Daryl through the smudged RV window. He was still outside, surrounded by walkers, his knife flashing in the dim light as he fought them off. She saw the strain on his face, the weariness in his movements, and without a second thought, she yanked open the RV door and jumped out.

"Wait—Alyssa!" Rick's voice called after her, but she was already running.

The night air hit her like a shock, thick with the smell of decay and the sound of groans from the walkers closing in. She gripped her knife tighter, her adrenaline overriding her fear as she sprinted toward Daryl, determination hardening her gaze. Daryl was focused on a walker just in front of him, his knife sinking into its skull, but as he dispatched it, another staggered toward him from the side, its rotting hands reaching out.

"Daryl!" Alyssa shouted, drawing the walker's attention just before it reached him. Without thinking, she lunged forward, sinking her knife into the walker's head, using all her strength to drive it down.

The walker crumpled to the ground, and Daryl turned, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw her standing there. "What the hell are you doin', girl?" he snapped, his voice rough with shock and anger. "I don't need no one else out here!"

Alyssa shot him a defiant look, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. "You're welcome," she muttered, refusing to back down. "I wasn't just going to watch."

Daryl scowled, but a flicker of reluctant respect crossed his face as he looked at the walker she'd taken down. "Fine. Just don't go gettin' yourself killed," he grumbled, before turning back to face the remaining walkers.

They fought side by side, Alyssa moving in tandem with Daryl, each watching the other's back. She was terrified, every sense heightened, but there was a strange comfort in knowing she wasn't alone out here. She felt a surge of adrenaline, her fear transforming into focus, her movements becoming quicker, more precise.

Daryl took down a walker to her left, glancing over at her with a nod of approval. "Not bad, kid," he muttered, his tone grudging but genuine.

They cleared the last few walkers together, the immediate threat subsiding as the camp fell silent once more. Alyssa let out a shaky breath, her hands trembling from the exertion and the lingering fear.

Daryl looked at her, his expression softening just a fraction. "You didn't have to do that," he said, his voice gruff but tinged with something close to gratitude. "But... thanks."
