A Glimpse of What Could BeThe silence between them stretched longer than either of them had expected. Lauren stared at her phone, the words Camila had just spoken—*"Just us"—*still lingering in her ears. Her heart pounded against her ribcage, and her fingers tightened around the device as she sat there, unsure how to respond.
She had spent years suppressing feelings, pretending that it didn't matter, that she didn't care anymore. But now, hearing Camila's voice crackling through the speaker, all of those buried emotions resurfaced, flooding her mind like a tidal wave.
"Lauren?" Camila's voice cut through the silence, soft but fragile. "Are you still there?"
"Yeah," Lauren replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She swallowed hard. "I'm here."
She could hear the shakiness in her own voice, the vulnerability that she hadn't allowed herself to show in years. She felt like a stranger to her own emotions. How could Camila be so brave, so open, when all Lauren could do was second-guess herself?
There was a long pause on the other end, and Lauren could feel the hesitation in the air, as if Camila were choosing her words carefully. "I didn't mean to drop this on you like that," Camila finally said. "But after hearing your song... everything just kind of came crashing back. All those feelings I thought I buried, and then seeing you again..." Camila trailed off, as if lost in her own thoughts.
Lauren clenched her fists, not knowing how to respond. Her own feelings mirrored Camila's. Seeing her again in the supermarket had been a shock, but hearing her words now, so raw and unguarded, made everything feel real again. Too real.
"I know it's sudden," Camila continued, voice trembling. "But I can't ignore this anymore, Lauren. I don't know if I should even be saying this, but I can't keep pretending that we're just strangers. That we don't feel anything for each other."
Lauren took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "You think I'm just going to forget everything?" she asked, her voice thick with emotion. "You think I don't feel it too?"
Camila's breath caught on the other end of the line, as if the weight of Lauren's words had hit her all at once. "I've tried," she whispered. "I've tried to move on. I've tried to tell myself that it doesn't matter, that you don't matter. But the truth is, Lauren... I've never stopped thinking about you. I never stopped caring."
Lauren felt her throat tighten, the words heavy and loaded, but she couldn't push them away. "I didn't forget you either," she admitted, her voice barely audible. "But I couldn't let myself believe that there was still something between us. We've both changed. It's not like it used to be."
"I know," Camila said softly. "I know it's different now, but what we had—what we still have—it's not something I can just throw away. And it's not something I can just ignore. I can't pretend anymore, Lauren."
The words hung in the air like an open wound. The vulnerability, the sincerity in Camila's voice, made Lauren's heart ache. "I don't know if I'm ready to go through this again," Lauren said, her voice shaking. "We've both been hurt. It's not just about us anymore. The world... everything is so different now. It's not just about our feelings."
"I don't care about the world," Camila replied quickly, the urgency in her voice palpable. "I care about us. What we were... and what we could still be. I care about you."
Lauren closed her eyes, the words sweeping over her. They were so simple, so pure, but they carried so much weight. Camila's honesty shattered the walls Lauren had built up around herself, and suddenly, she felt exposed, vulnerable.
"But I'm scared, Camila," Lauren confessed, her voice breaking. "I don't know how to do this. I don't know if I'm ready for this. For us."
"I'm scared too," Camila said softly. "But I don't want to run anymore. I don't want to hide from what's real between us."
Lauren squeezed her eyes shut, trying to steady her thoughts. The fear, the uncertainty, it all made her want to pull away, to protect herself. But something in Camila's voice, something in the way she spoke, made Lauren's resolve waver.
"You're not running anymore?" Lauren asked, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
"I'm not running," Camila confirmed, her voice quiet but firm. "I've been running for so long, but not anymore. Not this time."
There was a long pause between them, the weight of the moment pressing down on both of them. The air seemed to thrum with anticipation, with everything unsaid hanging just out of reach.
"I can't keep pretending, either," Lauren whispered. "I can't keep pretending I don't feel this. You're right. We can't keep avoiding it."
"Then let's not," Camila said softly, almost relieved. "Let's stop pretending. Let's figure this out. Together."
Lauren's heart raced, her breath shallow, as she sat with Camila's words, feeling the gravity of them. The tension that had been building since that supermarket encounter was now at a breaking point. They couldn't go back. But could they move forward?
"I don't know what this will look like," Lauren admitted, her voice barely a breath. "But I want to try. I'm willing to try, Camila."
There was a pause, and Lauren could almost hear the relief in Camila's voice when she finally spoke again. "I'm willing to try too. We'll figure it out, one step at a time."
And with that, the call ended. The tension between them was still there, thick and unresolved. But something had shifted. They weren't the same people they had been all those years ago, but maybe, just maybe, they were ready to try again.
