The scholar student was explaining something, only to be cut off by my
voice. "Sir, I think this is only a
trick—"

"Sir, I think if we solve this sum using this trick, it would be much easier," I said, showing my work.

The professor looked at the sum for a moment, amusement spreading across his face. "You’re really brilliant, Eirik. I’m impressed by your skills," he said, his aged voice tinged with surprise and a wide smile.

I nodded curtly, my expression remaining cold and unreadable.

After class, I walked through the hallway, the weight of exhaustion pressing down on me.

My eyes felt heavy, my vision slightly blurred. Two days of restless nights had taken their toll.

Dark circles shadowed my face, and my pale skin looked even more ghostly under the dim lights. The strap of my bag dug into my shoulder, feeling heavier with every step.

The dream. The cursed dream.
The flickering light. The trembling hand. The sea of dead bodies.

It wouldn’t leave my mind.

I was jolted back to reality when someone bumped into me. The book in my hand slipped to the ground.

"I—I’m sorry," a girl's voice stammered. "I wasn’t looking where I was going."

She scrambled to gather her fallen books and papers.

I stared at her for a moment before bending down to retrieve my book.

"That’s fine," I muttered coldly, my voice devoid of any emotion. Without waiting for her response, I turned and walked away.

I hadn’t gone far when I heard my name being shouted.

"Eirik! Hey, wait up!"

I turned to see Zordan, the scholar student from my class, rushing toward me. His smile was wide and eager, his voice overly enthusiastic.

"Hi, I’m Zordan. From your class. Can you teach me that trick you showed the professor?"

I nodded, reaching to open my book—but froze.

This wasn’t my book. No way.

My heart sank.

I glanced around the hallway, searching for the girl, but she was gone.

Taking a deep breath, I said, "Can we talk about this later? I have something to do."

Zordan smiled and nodded. "Sure, no problem." He walked off, leaving me standing there.

Without wasting a moment, I headed in the direction the girl had gone.

My exhaustion clung to me like a second skin, but the nagging thought of my misplaced book urged me forward.
