"No!" he squeaked and wriggled like a worm on a hook as Lucien held on to him tighter. "I would never! I am your friend, your servant—for you only—I—I could—would never rat you guys out!"
"You just told on yourself, little demon." Lucien gritted his teeth together looking up at Alice who'd taken on a sickly shade of white. "I knew we couldn't trust him, Alice, he's a slime ball."
Again the screeching bat noise sounded and this time everyone heard it. Demetrius stiffened along with Raven who went for her blade.
"What was that?" Alice demanded looking back down to Furus who resembled a troll.
Furus squeaked with pain as Lucien jabbed a fist into his gut. "Tell us or we'll gut you!"
"Fine! Fine! Please don't hurt poor little Furus!"
"Oh goody, now he's speaking in the third person," Demetrius muttered warily.
"Furus, who paid you off?" Alice demanded nicer than Lucien who still had a tight grip around Furus's raggedy collar that began to tear.
Furus looked to us with his demon eyes, nibbling on his bottom lip that began to bleed. "The pretty angels caught little Furus digging around where he wasn't s-supposed to—"
We all jumped as the squeak noise became louder and closer.
"They—they promised Furus that they're s-spare his life along with some tasty soulsies if hims promised to lure his devoted clients into a trap—ah!" Lucien growled under his breath and shook the raggedy old man until his teeth chattered.
"You sold us to the angels!? I'm gonna carve your skin with my teeth!"
"Traitor!" Raven hissed.
"Furus!" Alice scolded. "What did you tell the angels?"
Furus could hardly answer from being shaken to mad death by Lucien whose face had purpled with anger. Spit flew from his bleeding cracked lips as he tried to get words to form on his lips.
"You scum!"
"Lucien!" Alice barked. "Leave him!"
Lucien looked peeved to Alice before dropping Furus on to his knees shaking horribly.
"Who's coming for us, Furus?" Alice said earnestly.
Furus sobbed and sucked on his thumb as he rocked back and forth. "Sc—Scyths!" he hiccupped before he wailed in horror. "Icky, nasty Scyths!"
Alice's eyes darkened as he looked to Lucien. "We've gotta go. Now."
"What are Scyths?" I hissed, eyes mulling over the walls as the screeching neared.
Demetrius moved uncomfortably, watching the holes in the walls and back over his shoulder to the stairs. "Vile creatures that work for demons or in this case crooked angels. They act like hellhounds, go and retrieve, but they're worse-much, much worse."
"How worse?" I asked worriedly.
"Well, they usually have a hunger that overrides that command and they end up eating what they've gone to retrieve instead."
I swallowed nervously. "Well, they can eat my sword."
Demetrius looked down to me hopelessly. "Good luck, because you can't kill them either."
I gazed up at him and over to Alice my gut dropping a couple of inches.
"Raven, Lilith, Demetrius, out now," Alice barked.
We began to move, but were stopped by Furus sudden insane cackling. We all stopped and turned to the old man who rocked back and forth on the ground, nibbling his thumb that began to peel away to bone.
