Chapter twenty eight:

Start from the beginning

"Won't get out that way," he giggled. "Trapped...trapped we is, angels surrounded the city with horrible, icky Scyths," he sang.

Lucien roared and round-housed the demon in the face with a horrible crack, breaking his neck instantly. Moments later a black wisp of smoke rose from the body and circled the place before diving through one of the holes in the wall and disappearing.

"That cheater!" Lucien growled.

Again the sound of the Scyths closed in nearer, their horrible screech like knives to my ears.

"Let's get out of here!" Raven howled.

"I couldn't agree more, let's," Alice said as we all turned heel and booked it for the stairs.

Careful not to fall through the step again, I jogged along the side before we reached the upper level and came out through the church.

"This way!" Lucien commanded, running for the entryway where we'd come in.

We all followed in pursuit, racing out of the church and back into the city square where I was once again thankful for light and breathable air. Instantly, we skidded to a halt. I nearly collided into Demetrius's back. I looked over his shoulder to see the cause of the delay, I saw the monstrous creatures surrounding us, leaving no exit or retreat.

The Scyths had huge wolf-like bodies and large patches of open skin that was stretched over thin bone. Their heads were bird-like with no feathers, just a curved beaked mouth and sharp teeth that snapped together hungrily. I winced as their claws clicked on ground as they approached us.

"Oh god," Lucien groaned.

"How are we going to kill these things?" Raven said looking around at the six of them that circled around us.

"We can't, remember?" Lucien barked, pulling out his sword.

"Can't we just run for it?" Raven shouted over the clicking of the Scyth's beaks as they drooled just watching us.

"No!" Alice snapped. "They'll catch us and rip us to shreds before we even get into the sky, and there's Lilith too."

I snickered. "I can take care of myself."

"Oh really?" Demetrius chided. "Because until recently, you didn't even know what a Scyth was."

"Shut up!" I snapped back.

"Enough!" Alice roared. "We fight together and figure out a plan." He crouched in a ready position. "In the meantime, I wanna kick some ass." He swung his blades tauntingly in his grip.

Lucien nodded. "Fine, let's do this. NOW!"

The Scyths clicked their beaks excitingly, and charged forwards, their long curved talons outstretched for us.

A Scyth came charging at me, leaping in the air. I easily dodged it and blocked its talons with my blades, dancing around it, avoiding its sharper bits and protecting my softer ones.

Beside me, Raven yelled victoriously as she sent her boot into one's chest, sending it flying into a pile of broken glass where it chirped painfully, but rolled back up on to its feet and dashed for her again. Demetrius looked like he was having fun with his, waltzing around, attacking fiercely, so precise. His blades sliced into the creature, making it cry out in pain as black sludge oozed from its wounds, but it didn't seem to care or protest. It just came snapping its jaws and lunging forward, exhausting our blocking efforts.

"Ah!" Lucien yelled as he fell back, barely holding off an eager Scyth that lunged at his face, screeching madly at him.

"Lucien!" Alice called, too busy with one of the monsters to move.
