"What is it, Jackson?" His voice was low, controlled, each syllable clipped with an almost surgical precision, betraying his barely concealed impatience. "Can't you see I'm engaged in something far more consequential than your petty concerns?" He gestured vaguely towards the pulsating mass within the colossal chamber with a gloved hand, his movement dismissive. "The very future of biological augmentation, the transcendence of human limitations, hangs precariously in the balance, and you dare to interrupt this delicate process with... what trivial matter has managed to penetrate the sanctity of this lab?"
Jackson swallowed hard, the weight of his urgent news pressing down on him, a heavy stone in his already constricted chest. He knew Adam's ambition was not merely a desire but a force of nature, a relentless, all-consuming drive that brooked no obstacles, no delays, and certainly no interruptions. "Sir... it's about Mr. Soohyung. Kang Soohyung. He's... he's claiming the results of our project as his own. He's presenting them at the Global Bio-Innovation Summit as if they were his discoveries." The words tumbled out in a rush, each syllable laced with a sense of disbelief and impending disaster.
A visible tremor, almost imperceptible yet undeniably present, ran through Adam's rigid posture, a sudden flicker of something dark and dangerous igniting in the depths of his hazel eyes. Several researchers, who had been hunched over their complex workstations nearby, their fingers flying across holographic keyboards and their gazes fixed on glowing monitors, froze in their movements. A young woman with vibrant purple hair woven with intricate silver threads and multiple piercings that glinted under the harsh lights exchanged a nervous, wide-eyed glance with a balding man adjusting his thick, horn-rimmed glasses, his brow furrowed in concern. The low hum of the machinery in the room seemed to deepen, to take on a more ominous tone, as if the very lab held its breath, anticipating the volatile reaction.
Adam's gaze sharpened, the warm hazel of his eyes intensifying, becoming almost predatory in their focus. For a long, unnerving beat, he remained utterly still, his expression an unreadable mask, a carefully constructed facade that hid the storm raging beneath. Then, with a sudden, violent motion that startled everyone in the room, he slammed his gloved fist onto a nearby steel table with a resounding clang that echoed through the vast space, the sharp, metallic sound momentarily overpowering the constant hum of the equipment. Beakers rattled precariously on their stands, and a small glass vial, filled with a viscous, emerald-green liquid, tumbled to the floor and shattered, releasing a sharp, acrid chemical scent that stung Jackson's nostrils and made his eyes water.
"You are right!" Adam's voice exploded, raw with a fury that seemed to emanate from the very depths of his being, shaking with unrestrained rage. "That parasitic leech! That opportunistic snake! He would do that, wouldn't he? Slither in under the cover of darkness and shamelessly take credit for what others have bled for! Others have sacrificed countless hours, their very sanity, for! But this..." He swept his arm across the entirety of the lab, encompassing the intricate machinery, the glowing screens displaying complex algorithms, the very air they breathed, thick with the promise of scientific breakthrough. "This laboratory! This entire groundbreaking endeavor! It is mine! Conceived in the depths of my mind during sleepless nights fueled by caffeine and relentless ambition, built with my own two hands and the tireless dedication of my team, fueled by my unwavering, relentless pursuit of the next evolutionary leap for mankind!"
The researchers recoiled, their hushed whispers dying in their throats, their faces pale with a mixture of fear and apprehension. Jackson felt a cold knot of dread tighten in the pit of his stomach. He had witnessed Adam's formidable temper before, the sharp, biting sarcasm and the icy dismissal, but this felt different, more primal, more personal, a raw outpouring of wounded pride and possessive rage.
Slowly, deliberately, Adam straightened his imposing frame, rolling his broad shoulders back as if to physically contain his fury. The furious flush that had momentarily colored his face began to recede, replaced by a chillingly calm mask, an expression of cold, calculated resolve that was far more terrifying than his outburst of anger. A thin, cruel smile stretched his lips, a fleeting flicker of dark amusement dancing in the depths of his hazel eyes. It was not a smile of pleasure or mirth, but one that promised pain, retribution, and devastating consequences for anyone who dared to cross him.
"Very well," he murmured, his voice dangerously soft, a silken whisper that carried more menace than any shout. "If Kang Soohyung wants to play this treacherous game, I assure you, I know how to play it... with far more devastating consequences than he can possibly imagine. I have... resources at my disposal, connections in places he wouldn't even dream of, that he can't even begin to comprehend."
The silence in Room No-6 became suffocating, heavy with unspoken threats and the palpable tension that hung in the air like a thick fog. The only sound that dared to break the oppressive stillness was the steady, rhythmic hum of the machinery, a morbid counterpoint to the silent fury that radiated from Dr. Adam Kim. No one dared to meet his gaze, their eyes fixed on their consoles or the polished steel floor, each lost in their own apprehensive thoughts.
Adam's attention then shifted, his sharp gaze landing on his usually unflappable secretary, Ms. Eugine, who stood ramrod straight near the entrance to the lab, her normally composed face pale and drawn, her slender fingers fidgeting nervously with the sleek, silver pen clipped to the pocket of her pristine lab coat. She was a study in controlled anxiety, her professional facade, usually so meticulously maintained, now barely masking the raw unease that churned beneath the surface.
"Eugine," Adam's voice was smooth, almost silken, but a distinct venomous undertone lurked beneath the polished surface, a subtle hiss that sent a fresh wave of apprehension through the room. "Call him."
Eugine swallowed audibly, her Adam's apple bobbing nervously in her throat. Her eyes flickered hesitantly towards Adam, a silent plea for clarification or perhaps even a reprieve, before she nodded curtly, her movements stiff and unnatural. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached for the sleek, secure phone resting on the nearby console. It wasn't a standard WHEP communication device; it was a private line, encrypted and untraceable, a direct link to a world far removed from the sterile logic of scientific inquiry. Her fingers hovered over the keypad for a fleeting moment, as if she were contemplating the implications of the call, before she began to dial a series of numbers with a hesitant precision.
As the phone rang on the other end, the silence in the lab seemed to deepen even further, amplifying the soft electronic chirps. Eugine spoke in a low, professional tone, her voice betraying only a faint tremor that hinted at the turmoil within. "Mr. Kim Genie? Dr. Adam would like a word. Yes, it's urgent." She paused, listening intently to the response on the other end of the line. Her brow furrowed slightly, a subtle indication of the unusual nature of the conversation, before she continued, her voice taking on a subtly placating tone, as if she were trying to soothe a dangerous animal. "He... he mentioned he was missing your... unique insights into... certain matters. Yes. Right. What else could we expect from Kim Genie?" A strained, unnatural smile flickered across her pale lips as she listened to the reply, her eyes darting nervously towards Adam. "Of course, sir. He'll be... delighted to hear from you." She ended the call with a soft click, placing the phone back in its cradle with a deliberate slowness, her hand lingering on the device for a moment longer than necessary.
Adam watched her every movement, his arms folded across his broad chest, the wicked smirk never fully leaving his lips. Science, he knew, had its limitations. Some problems, particularly those involving human treachery and ambition, required a more... personal touch. A touch that Kim Genie, with his shadowy network and unconventional methods, excelled at.
Kang Soohyung, in his desperate grab for recognition and glory, had just made a grave miscalculation. He had underestimated not only the brilliance of Adam Kim's scientific mind but also the ruthlessness that lay beneath the polished veneer of the esteemed researcher. And in the sterile, unforgiving world of WHEP, under the cold, unwavering gaze of scientific ambition, that was a fatal error indeed. The hum of the fluorescent lights continued their monotonous drone, oblivious to the dark machinations that were now set in motion, a silent soundtrack to the impending storm.
