brianna's pushed open the door, the familiar little bell chiming above her head. it was barely nine am , but the place was already buzzing with regulars. a few people tapped away at laptops, others chatted quietly over steaming mugs.
"ah, my favourite!" sara's voice cut through the low murmur of conversation. she stood behind the counter, her silver hair tied into a sleek bun, bright red lipstick perfectly applied. she was in her sixties, but moved like a woman who still owned every room she entered.
brianna gave a warm smile. "morning sara." "morning, no work today?" sara asked, sliding a plate of fresh croissants closer to the front. "no no i do just in an hour but yet im so tired "
"i've already lived two lives since i woke up it's so been busy today"
brianna sighed, shaking her head. "i woke up and forcefully got ready for the j word."
"j word? what have i missed in this generation now" she asked curiously "ohh job! what don't you like your job?"
"no i do but just certain things i could complain about — but not the time"
"uh huh," sara said, narrowing her eyes like she didn't believe a word. "coffe? or are we starting with something different today? ive got a cinnamon latte that could solve the j word problems."
"make it the latte," brianna decided, leaning on the counter. "and maybe one of those good ass croissants before someone else gets to it."
sara laughed, her rings catching the light as she plated one. "good choice. oh, and alina's in the back pretending to be busy, you should go harass her before she hides from me for the rest of the day."
brianna chuckled. "sounds like a plan." she took her latte, the steam curling up into the air, and glanced toward the back. "sara, you're too good to us."
"darling, i'm too good to everyone," sara shot back. "especially for that guy i went out with last night which is also another story"
brianna gasped, turning toward the cafe tables. "you're actually going to have now tell me that later."
"you'll have to bribe me with something," sara called after her.
by the time brianna slid into her usual spot near the corner, she could see alina emerge from the kitchen, balancing her phone in one hand and a tray in the other.
"morning," brianna said, kicking out the chair opposite her.
alina rolled her eyes but smiled. "you've been here for like two minutes and you're already you're stealing my croissants."
"she offered!" brianna defended, tearing a piece of the flaky pastry. "anyway, i needed this. my morning was too quiet without you shouting the house down."
"decided to be nice and so i let you sleep" she claimed despite being loud as ever.
they got so caught up talking about random things, and alina's upcoming trip that brianna didn't notice the time until she glanced at her phone and practically jumped.
