When we came closer she put her hand slightly on my shoulder and kissed both of my cheeks.
An European greeting, huh? It had been such a long time since I’d been given one that I couldn’t stop myself to ask. “Where are you from?”
“France.” Zoë’s mom blinked and smiled a little bit more. “Yes, Zoë has French blood in her if you want to know.”
Hnn… I looked at Zoë clearly not surprised to know that fact. I could totally imagine this girl being truly French…
“Wait, but you don’t have an accent… Mrs Bach.” I said suddenly catching myself being rude. I quickly tried to fix it. “Which means you have really good English”
Man. Why was I just rambling here? It’s totally strange of me.
“Thank you very much.” She answered back nodding slightly at me with a smile showing not a hint of discontent. “Now go on. People are waiting for you.”
Zoë put a hand on my back and pushed me out from the kitchen but not before I smiled back to her mom.
Once we were out of view Zoë came close to me and said, “No doubt that my mom likes you, Alex. That’s nice to know. Plus you were more talkative to her than you have been with anyone else which is also good.”
I was about to say something back to her but then we came out onto the living room in junction with the dining room which both had been cleared out and replaced with tall glass tables. I looked around as I heard music playing on the speakers and found myself staring at a variety of colored gowns and suits. It seemed as if a light mood was hanging over the crowd of 40 plus people as they ate, entertained themselves with the different mimes hanging around or played the piano over in the distance.
Who would’ve thought a party like this could seem so interesting in such a plain setting?
“It’s the people.” Zoë said to me hooking her hand on my forearm and wrist. “These musicians… it’s lucky to have found them all in one place. They’re incredibly creative and talented. Most of them can paint or have some other wicked talents.”
“Or something like you? Your crazy adrenaline sports?” I said raising an eyebrow to her.
Hearing a chuckle from her I felt Zoë squeeze me with her warm hand. “Yeah. Something of that sort. ”
As we walked around the party room Zoë presented to me everyone who received the card I put into their lockers. I must admit, I did better than I expected myself. Any time that I’d start panicking Zoë would squeeze me somewhere, my hand or my arm my hip or my shoulder, and reassure me. I barely talked to them but they seemed friendly enough not to judge me for my stuttering.
After a good 30 minutes into the whole greeting and conversing thing I stumbled upon two people I knew already.
Matt and Jessica.
“Hey, gorgeous.” Jessica said winking at me with her cool pretty eyes.
I slightly took a step back and I guess I went a little red because both Zoë and Jessica started laughing.
“Don’t worry, ‘French girl’.” Jessica said air-quoting the phrase with one hand and raised the other for me to see. “I’m dating someone.”
I looked the intertwined hands and made my way to Matt’s face. Seriously?
“He… was you date?” I asked remembering last time I saw her.
“Yep.” She said kissing his cheek making Matt’s face burn bright red.
He coughed into is hand with furrowed dark eyebrows and said. “Anyways. Have you met everyone?”
“Almost,” Zoë answered for me. She surrounded my waist with her arm as she pointed behind the newly made couple in front of us. “Only those 2 remaining there… Although she knows one of them already.”
Jessica and Matt turned around blocking my view, and it was Jessica who turned back to us quickly as Matt took a good look at them.
“Zoë!” She half-mouthed half hissed. “Heather Adlington? Was she REALLY here? I mean, it’s not surprising cuz of the music stuff around here. But still!”
“Calm down, Jess.” Zoë said to her making it evident Jessica had been in France while they were dating… “Nothing’s wrong. I promise.”
I couldn’t help but wonder why there was such a big deal while Zoë and Jessica stared at each other. Jessica with a ‘are you sure’ looking face, and Zoë with an indifferent expression.
What was that about?
Ugh… the longer I socialized with people the more my observant qualities were coming back… and it didn’t help with the enhanced ears I had because I could hear Jessica’s mutter when she pulled Matt and rushed past me.
“Heather will definitely get her.”
