"Damsel in distress?" I asked almost laughing. He was in Italy. I don't know why but from there he wanted to go back to where he used to live in Scotland for a while. Last I heard, Caleb mentioned something about a book but I still don't know. He's a pretty random guy and he published that book, 68 Days.
That book became a sensation surprisingly. I don't know how and true to his word when I got one of the first copies of the book it didn't say 'to princess and ugly' instead it said to 'princess and my green-eyed homeboy' which set me off on a riot.
But no one still knew who Romero Henderson, Caleb's-not really-Jane Doe author name, was. There have been articles about it everywhere and Caleb even laughed about it for the longest time. He was going to tell the press who he was one day. That a fifteen-year-old kid had written his famous book Living in the Never and now as an eighteen-year-old man was on the search for inspiration to write something else.
"Yes, my ugly best friend is your damsel in distress rather than your knight in shining armour. I feel like he's trying to avoid my calls."
"Well, how many times have you called him?"
"You mean since this morning?"
"Yeah."
"I don't know. Like 72 times and it's not going through." Well, if you called 72 times then I wonder why he's not picking up the phone.
Sam returned with a cup of hot chocolate for me and coffee for himself as I pressed my phone to my shoulder. "You aren't answering Caleb's calls?"
"No," Sam bit back a smile. "He's been on my case about another stupid theory of his and I've turned off my phone since yesterday night."
"What theory?" I asked confused. Sam took a sip of his coffee and before gesturing to my phone. I voiced my question to Caleb who got excited.
"Okay, so you know that phrase that redheads are the wildest in bed-"
"Hold up. One, I don't think I've heard that phrase although I'm pretty sure Ivan said that one time. Second, I don't think I want to know what your theory is anymore. Third, I don't need a third reason. Change the topic."
"Ugh fine," I could visualize him pouting. "Wow princess I thought that you liked hearing me talk."
"I do-sometimes- but hearing you talk about your sex life is not number one on my list of conversations," I muttered, biting into the doughnut.
I could see Sam tense and he narrowed his eyes at my iPhone before gesturing for me to hand it to him. I hesitantly handed it to him and he took a deep breath before speaking. "Caleb why the fuck are you discussing sexual stuff with my girlfriend?"
I didn't hear Caleb's response but it got Sam to look irritated. "You are an idiot."
That when I heard Caleb yell loudly so loud I heard it. "I AM NOT AN IDIOT."
"We'll talk later...yes I will answer my phone...no I do not-I am never going to say that to you...I don't care if you love me like a brother...Caleb!...Stop being such a prick bye." He hung up the phone and handed it to me.
"Your relationship will never fail," I told him and Sam scowled. "What did he want you to say?"
"He wanted me to tell him that I missed him."
"You do." I pointed out.
"No, I don't." Sam retorted, getting up and away from the subject as he put his hat on covering his tangled curls. He started walking out of the shop when I laughed in disbelief, putting on my hat and following him.
