MAUD
You know nothing Naomi Sparrow.
NAOMI
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think they're here.
Suddenly, JESSICA appears, holding a pair of ropes.
JESSICA
Looking for something?
NAOMI
Crikey, Maud, she's got your ropes.
MAUD
Tell me something I don't already know!
NAOMI
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km.
MAUD
I know that already!
NAOMI
I bite my toenails.
JESSICA
(appalled) Dude!
While JESSICA is looking at NAOMI with disgust, MAUD lunges forward and grabs her deadly ropes. He wields them, triumphantly.
MAUD
Prepare to die, you wild cabbage!
JESSICA
No please! All I did was punch a bunch of children!
NAOMI enters, unseen by any of the others.
MAUD
I cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour! Those children were defenceless! Well now they have a defender - and that's me! Maud Doop defender of innocent children.
JESSICA
Don't hurt me! Please!
MAUD
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't use these ropes on you right away!
JESSICA
Because Maud, I am your mother.
MAUD looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects herself.
MAUD
No you're not!
JESSICA
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.
JESSICA tries to grab the ropes but MAUD dodges out of the way.
MAUD
Who's the mummy now? Huh? Huh?
Unexpectedly, JESSICA slumps to the ground.
NAOMI
Did she just faint?
MAUD
I think so. Well that's disappointing. I was rather hoping for a more dramatic conclusion, involving my deadly ropes.
MAUD crouches over JESSICA's body.
NAOMI
Be careful, Maud. It could be a trick.
MAUD
No, it's not a trick. It appears that... It would seem... Jessica Wilson is dead!
MAUD
What?
MAUD
Yes, it appears that I scared her to death.
NAOMI claps her hands.
NAOMI
So your ropes did save the day, after all.
NAOMI steps forward.
NAOMI
Is it true? Did you kill the wild goblin?
MAUD
Naomi how long have you been...?
NAOMI puts her arm around MAUD.
NAOMI
Long enough.
MAUD
Then you saw it for yourself. I killed Jessica Wilson.
NAOMI
Then the children are safe?
MAUD
It does seem that way!
A crowd of vulnerable children enter, looking relived.
NAOMI
You are their hero.
The children bow to MAUD.
MAUD
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Jessica Wilson will never punch children ever again, is enough for me.
NAOMI
You are humble as well as brave!
One of the children passes MAUD a wooden ring
NAOMI
I think they want you to have it, as a symbol of their gratitude.
MAUD
I couldn't possibly.
Pause.
MAUD
Well, if you insist.
MAUD takes the ring.
MAUD
Thank you.
The children bow their heads once more, and leave.
MAUD turns to NAOMI.
MAUD
Does this mean you want me back?
NAOMI
Oh, Maud, of course I want you back!
MAUD smiles for a few seconds, but then looks defiant.
MAUD
Well you can't have me.
NAOMI
WHAT?
MAUD
You had no faith in me. You had to see my scare a goblin to death before you would believe in me. I don't want a lover like that.
NAOMI
But...
MAUD
Please leave. I want to spend time with the one person who stayed with me through thick and thin - my best friend, Naomi.
NAOMI grins.
NAOMI
But...
NAOMI
You heard the lady. Now be off with you. Skidaddle! Shoo!
NAOMI
Maud?
MAUD
I'm sorry Naomi, but I think you should skidaddle.
NAOMI leaves.
NAOMI turns to MAUD.
NAOMI
Did you mean that? You know ... that I'm your best friend?
MAUD
Of course you are!
The two walk off arm in arm.
Suddenly NAOMI stops.
NAOMI
When I said I bite my toenails, you know I was just trying to distract the goblin don't you?
