Let’s say you are in one of those small towns. You are living there and you are sitting at home one day when you hear your front door know turning and the front door is opening. Your first thought is that your family or neighbors have come for a surprise visit but when you got to greet them, instead of finding a face of someone you know you find the face of a stranger wearing a mask. The man is a big man with bulging muscles beneath a tight black shirt. You are a small women, you know that you cannot fight him off, so what do you do? You can’t call the 911 because it will take over an hour for cops to arrive. Who knows what the man can do to you in that time? The man is also blocking your only escape. Your only option to protect yourself from this man is to grab your gun from the hall closet. The man has yet to spot you, he is too busy eyeing your flat screen TV and emptying other expensive items into a bag he carried. You start to inch backward to the door of the closet. Your hand touches the knob but you take the wrong step. A loud squeak comes from beneath your foot; you have stepped on a dog toy. The man’s eyes fly up to meet you and immediately blaze with anger. He starts to run toward you but you are quicker. You pull your gun out of the closet and aim it at the man and shout in an assertive tone, “Freeze or I’ll shoot!” The man stops in his tracks with a surprised look in his eyes which quickly turns to amusement. He starts to laugh at you, but you pull the hammer back and cock the gun showing him that you mean business. The laughing immediately stops and fear becomes evident in the man’s eyes. You yell at him, “Drop my stuff and put your hands up!” The man does as you say. You reach into your pocket and dial 911 on your cell phone, reporting what just happened. They tell you the cops are on their way. You then call your neighbor who brings his own gun over to your house along with zip ties. Your neighbor tells the man to get on the floor and to put his hands behind his back. The man does what he is told because you now hold two guns in your hands pointed directly at his chest. After you and your neighbor have the man all tied up you stand and wait for the cops to arrive with your guns at the ready…If you had had no guns you could have been severely hurt or worse dead by the time police arrived.
In another instance what if you and your kids are camping in the woods? You are all outside sitting around a fire enjoying s’mores and cowboy coffee. Your kids are laughing at each other trying to get the marshmallow off their faces. You sit back and watch them and all you can do is smile and think how great this time is. That’s what you were thinking when out of nowhere a mountain lion jumps out of the trees and lands right in front of your kids. It growls and sinks down ready to pounce. Your kids scream when they see it and run to hide behind you. The cat then pounces but you are faster. You pull your gun out from behind you and shoot the big cat. With a loud cry it drops to the ground dead. You and your kids are safe because of your gun.
Those are only a couple of instances where guns are useful for your own protection whether it be protection in your home or protection from wild animals. In these instances without guns you could be severely hurt or dead before anyone could even reach you to help.
Another reason for people to have firearms is for hunting. In many places the population of wild animals is controlled with hunting. If we didn’t have hunters it would take many government officials to even try to control the wild animal population. If you think of it this way that would be a lot more salaries that the government would have to pay and a lot more health insurance. How much more debt would that bring our states and country?
Another reason for citizens to carry firearms is that it is their right in the Constitution! The Second Amendment states that it shall not be infringed! In other words these rights cannot be taken away or broken! The amendments of the Constitution are held to apply to the states by the 14th Amendment which states,
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”5
