TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions of self-harm
Requested by xnthld. Hope this is okay.
Jasper was wandering around the camp. There was a spring in his step. His best friend was with him on Earth, and he couldn't keep the goofy little grin off hi face at the thought. He couldn't help but think about the adventures you could go on together. The new things you'd learn. The different places you'd find when the camp was beginning to grate on you both. The conversations you'd have because of all the new things you were getting to experience together.
An idea struck him. You could go and explore the little clearing to the south of the camp. He'd heard about if from Octavia- apparently there were butterflies or something. He nodded, steeling his resolve, before turning on his heel and walking towards your tent.
"Hey, I figured out our-" Jasper cut himself off at the sight of you though.
You were sitting on the edge of your bed, a blade in one hand. It hovered ominously over your arm, which was already lined with red. There were tears in your eyes, and your lip was a little red from where you'd been biting it. Jasper felt as though someone had reached into his chest and was gripping his heart. His throat was suddenly dry as his attention moved to look at you in the eyes.
"Why?" Was all he was able to croak out.
He felt as though he'd failed you. Failed to realise how much you were hurting, how much you needed him to be there- even if you didn't notice.
"Why didn't you knock?" You asked, sounding slightly detached from the situation. You were pulling at your sleeves, trying to cover the marks.
"I was excited...sorry." Said Jasper. He could feel the tears prickling his eyes; feel the coldness of the thought that he'd never realised. He wetted his lips, moving forwards to take the blade from your hand. He was surprised when you handed it over easily. "Why?"
You shrugged slightly as he sat beside you, his eyes never leaving you. "It helped." You said, "I can't explain it, it just did."
Jasper lightly took your hand in his, rubbing small circles by your thumb.
"I don't know if it's much help." He said, trying to keep his voice steady. He wanted the words to be right, to make sure that you understood. "But- for what it's worth- I need you to know that I'm here for you. I don't care how trivial you think a problem is; if you think it'd annoy me; if you think it's too late to talk. I want you to know that I'll listen, and I'll try and help you through it so you don't have to do this-" He indicated to your arm and felt a pang of sadness. "Again."
You twitched slightly, and he could tell that it was a big step. "Baby steps first though, right?" You asked in a small voice, one which reminded him of when you'd been younger and you'd tried acting innocent to get out of trouble.
He nodded, pulling you into a tight hug. "We take this at your speed. It only happens when you're ready. But I'm gonna be here every step of the way." He assured you.
He could feel you crying against his chest, felt you clump his shirt in your hands as if for comfort. "Thank you." You mumbled.
