Violet furrowed her brows, "What can I do that humans can't? Is that what you're asking?"

"Yes," The man in indigo said, exasperated.

Violet thought of the Ship Master, Purple, he told her to tell the whole truth. Thinking of him used to make her feel safe, now the thought upset her. Still, he was right.

"I can find people I know because my arms tingle and guide me. My senses are stronger. I can move things without touching them. I actually styled my hair with no hands today," they don't care about that, "Um, I can let people see my memories if we are making physical contact and... oh, I can listen to feelings and thoughts."

"All of those things? At once?" The woman in yellow leaned forward, tapping her fingers on the arms of her chair.

"You must be lying!" Shouted the woman in orange, her hair bouncing around her shoulders.

Violet sensed the essence of their thoughts and she was alarmed. Some wanted her sent back to where she came from, others simply didn't believe her. One particular being wanted her locked away. But... deep in the chaos, Violet sensed something else. Hope. One of the Vitruvians was hopeful, but she didn't know who.

The pink bird hopped from chair-back to the next, squawking excitedly.

She raised her hands, "I'm not a liar, I truly can do what I said. I'm not as experienced as you are, but if you teach me-"

Clearing his throat, the man in green spoke, " You will have to perform in the Maze of Influence."

Violet blinked in confusion. "The maze?"

"Yes, an intense trial of your skills and abilities. Considering the abilities you claim, you should be fine." The elder woman said.

"How long do I have to prepare?" She found the globe Purple gave her in her pocket and touched it lightly. The thoughts of the Council began to stream down from their podium again and they weren't kind and she wasn't ready to be tested yet.

The woman in blue looked down at her, "We will have you perform soon."

"But... what am I supposed to do? I've done nothing like this. My abilities are new, I got little chance to use them on the ship-"

"You only have to do your best," the old Vitruvian interrupted.

Violet took two steps forward, "Tell me why I'm here."

Chimes rang in the distance, echoing off the camber's stone walls covered in glyphs.

The blond woman sighed, "We will tell you after you prove yourself." She seemed irritated.

Her jaw clenched, "No... you said-"

"Don't worry, all in due time." The woman in blue soothed.

"Now go enjoy the city, Harkola is a lovely place." The man in green stood and arranged his notes.

The thought of being alone in the city among people like these scared the frustration out of her. " Um, I'm not sure where to go or where I'll be staying..."

"We have provided you with a guard and a guide. You have already met Ruby Topeki, but your guard will be different. He will treat you with the respect befitting a Vitruvian," the old woman's smile was acidic, " but do not forget you are human." She snapped her fingers three times.

In walked someone who looked human, but unusual. He was taller than Violet, but appeared her age. Dressed in a simple set of rust colored pants and shirt, he appeared clean. His feet were bare and his wavy golden hair was pulled into a knot behind his head. He smiled, showing two deep dimples in his cheeks. He looked like one of the beautiful men Violet saw in the decaying magazines at the Library. She didn't care for men romantically, but she understood how a girl who did might fall for him easily.
