The other grunted in response, its name suiting the erie chuckle that came after.
Aura felt Amos reach for something at his waist, heard the almost silent unsheathing of a blade. The beasts didn't hear it.
"Smells... angelic. Haven't smelt something that delicious since we ate those brats in Eden—"
Aura gasped, she knew who those "brats" were.
The eyeless beasts snapped towards the direction of the sound.
That they did hear.
"Fuck," Amos cursed under his breath.
What happened next was so fast even a vampire would struggle keeping track.
The beasts barrelled towards them, Amos shot upwards, flying Aura to a branch where they wouldn't be able to reach her, forcing the demons to collide.
They shook it off, ripping the air with guttural snarls. Sounds that should never have made their way to earth in the first place, their bones clattering against each other as they rose, stumps aiming toward the sky in the direction of where the angels sat now.
From the canopy, Aura and Amos watched. The latter beckoning at Aura to stay where she was before he plummeted to the ground with conviction, landing in perfect silence behind the smaller unsuspecting beast.
He made himself visible.
Aura gulped.
Despite how serious the situation was, something stirred in her core at the sight of him.
A giant at almost 7 feet with a body adorned head to toe in muscle upon muscle you could see bulging through his tunic. Pants that hung low and loose on his legs, but tight enough on his hips to stay up and allow unrestricted movement.
He was terrifyingly gorgeous.
Aura had seen the hard angles of his face so many times, admired the stubble along his jaw, the dark curls atop his head, but seeing him like this, with his silver wings stretched on either side of him spanning at least three metres, she was stunned to silence.
A curved sword at his side, the demons didn't even stand a chance.
He was fast, lethal, his eyes glossing over into a look that Aura didn't recognise as he cleaved the weapon through its heart, and tore it out with his free hand.
The other beast whipped towards the sound, and screamed in agony as it's kin fell to the ground, skin sinking into its bone and melting into that horrible liquid tar.
Amos lifted the heart to his lips and ripped into it like a feeding lion, keeping his eyes locked on the beast lumbering his way as he ate the heart of its friend. He wore the dripping goo on his lips with a coy smile, further enraging his opponent.
The angel stepped over the first corpse to meet the other foe half way, raising his sword in time to slam the blunt side against the stump of its head. Such force sent the monster soaring through the forest as though it had been hit by a boulder.
He finished the heart, licking his fingers and began sauntering towards the living beast now cowering away from him on the ground.
A darkness radiated from the angel.
The beast backed itself against a tree, and when it tried to manoeuvre around it, Amos piercing the sword into its hind leg, pinning it to the floor.
The demon screamed, thrashing against it like a wraith.
Amos crouched by its head, unfazed as it hissed profanities to his face. It aimed its talons at his eyes and he caught both wrists in his hands and snapped them in half.
"Why are you here." The angel murmured in the demons native tongue. His tone clipped and quiet.
The demon continued to curse him.
Amos released its wrists, watched as they drop feebly to the floor and wrapped his hand around its thick neck, expressionless save for the flash of anger in his eyes. That gaping mouth opened wider with a choking wail.
"Why. Are. You. here?" He growled this time, the ground rumbling beneath him.
If the poor creature had eyes it would be crying.
"Hhh——hhhh—-" it wheezed.
Amos released its neck, the rumbling stopped as he collected his temper.
"For her." It coughed, aiming its broken hand in Aura's direction.
"Others will come looking." It's jagged breathing almost made it difficult to determine its words. "It's only a matter of time."
"Who sent you."
The stump turned to face Amos.
Despite its predicament, its gaping mouth closed to form a mocking smile.
If that meant anything to Amos, he gave nothing away. Instead, impatient and bored, he tore his hand through its blackened rib cage and tore out its pitiful beating heart. The beast gasped as Amos devoured it's lifeline in two mouthfuls, body turning slack to announce its death. The angel lingered, regarding it with disinterest before wiping his lips clean and turning to face Aura as if he hadn't just eaten a demon heart.
A heart beat passed as the angels stared at each other. Grey storm guarded and weary against her lightning blue, as if he expected her to tuck tail and run away after what she saw.
Expecting her to be afraid.
Instead, Aura jumped off the branch, wind gathering around her to cushion her fall, scattering moss and fallen leaves.
Her steps were lazy and relaxed as she walked towards the corpse draped across the tree roots.
She kicked a bare foot against that abnormal stump for a head, obsidian goo attaching to her skin forcing her to cringe as she let It go and watched it go limp.
"We're gonna need to bring this back with us..." she announced, wiping her foot clean against the oak tree. "Everyone needs to see this for themselves."
Amos was silent, save for his footsteps as he came up behind her, wrapping an arm around her neck so he could pull her into his chest. "You're not gonna say anything about what you just saw?"
"It's none of my business" She smiled, craning her neck up to look at him. "An appetite for demon hearts? Explains why I never see you eat."
Amos' laughter echoed through the forest.
