Chapter 12: Sunday

Start from the beginning

     "Still quite far, young sir."

The driver had an English accent which Jess thought was odd.

"Didn't young-" The driver looked at Jess through the rear-view mirror and saw Leslie giving him a look which made him halt his words.

"Didn't what?" Jess asked.

The driver shook his head and cleared his throat. "Nothing, sir."

He leaned his back on the seat and looked out the window. The scenery outside was just empty. There wasn't any cars around or anything else and all he could see was just plain grass and white fences. It was the first time he had ever seen such an empty road.

After a moment of trying to find for a single car or at least a vehicle to drive pass, he looked back at Leslie who was now reading a thick book that he'd never seen before.

"Where'd you get that book from?"

Leslie didn't look at him and just jerked her head behind. "There."

Jess looked behind and found a stack of books arranged neatly. He wondered why he never noticed it before especially when it looked so obvious. He reached over and grabbed a random book.

"I can't understand this..." He mumbled sheepishly.

Leslie stole a peek at the book he was reading and giggled. He looked at her questioningly. "What?" He said, puzzled by her sudden giggle.

"You're reading Finnegans Wake by James  Joyce." She told him with a grin.

     He continued staring at her.

"It's a pretty complicated book to read so I wouldn't be surprised if you can't understand it."

As far as Jess was concerned, he was only getting C's for English so it doesn't really surprise him that he couldn't understand such a book. Nonetheless, Leslie was just a few months younger than him yet she could probably read most of the books that normal higher-schoolers couldn't. He put the book back behind and looked at what Leslie was reading. Maybe this time he could understand something.

Unfortunately, he couldn't. The girl was reading Nightwood by Djuna Barnes which most of the time, he couldn't understand what was going on in the book. At times he would go and ask Leslie to explain to him what was going on which she gladly did. Now he was learning a lot. Who knows, maybe he'll even get an A for English for once from this lesson he's getting from her.

As he continued to listen, his phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated. "One sec," he said and then took it out. "Hello?"

The voice sounded familiar.

"Babe! Where are ya?" The voice asked in a prissy manner.

Jess rubbed his head and then looked outside. "Oh Sonia," he tried to fake a chuckle. "I'm going somewhere babe." Calling Sonia 'babe' in front of Leslie was so embarrassing that his face turned slightly red. He looked at Leslie who was staring at him with her hand covering her mouth to prevent her giggles from escaping.
