Thirteen (The End)

"Hmm Lester, Lester, Lester." The woman flipped through the papers on the clipboard.

"Ah here we go. Yes, we have checked in your mother, father, and brother. Your father woke up about a day ago, he was also pulled from the waters. You've got a lucky family Phil Lester. I'm not sure if we have gotten everyone's name yet... there are so many, its chaotic... people are still looking for their loved ones."

Phil nodded, at least his family was safe.

"What about Howell? Is there a Dan Howell?" Phil asked.

The woman skimmed back through the pages again, "we've got two names for Howell...it's hard to read...but it says mother and son." The woman squinted her eyes as she read. "I don't see any Dan's."

"And you said you haven't checked everyone in, correct?" Phil asked, hopefully. The woman nodded.

That was all Phil need to know, he kicked off the thin blankets from his legs and meekly stood up with the help of the woman. His muscles ached like nothing he had ever felt before. He thanked the woman and limped through the other sleeping bodies, making sure to look for any that may resemble his missing lover. He remembered the last image he saw in the water before he had passed out, but tried to convince himself that it was not Dan he had seen in the water that night. It was dark, he was delusional from the cold; the person he saw could have been blonde for all Phil knew.

Still, it pained Phil. He felt a dull ache in his chest and his stomach muscles tightened. A lingering dread in the back of his mind kept telling him to expect the worst.

What pained him the most was knowing that Dan was alone in that water after they had jumped. He had no life vest and he was afraid. Phil never wanted the brown-eyed boy to ever be afraid again. He promised him the first night they met that if Dan fell in to the water, Phil would jump in after him and save him. Phil taught him how to swim because he never wanted Dan to ever be afraid again. He wanted to be there for him and he wasn't.

The worst thought, that Phil quickly pushed away, was the thought of Dan drowning, alone, in fear, in the middle of the thing he feared most.

Phil felt his throat tighten as he rounded a corner of the boat. There were hundreds of people sitting and standing and crying, looking around, desperately, for their loved ones.

"Phil!"

Phil looked around for the person who had called his name and caught sight of his family all rushing towards him. They all engulfed him in a hug and Phil could feel tears begin to roll down his cheeks.

"Thank god we all survived." His father said after pulling away from the big family hug.

"Yeah." Phil smiled.

"What happened to you Phil? We looked around during the chaos after the crash, but we couldn't find you." His brother asked.
