Chapter 16: Burke Family

     A few days later after their removal of the video, they went to school. Leslie was bombarded with questions about the party and people surprisingly congratulated her. She was pretty much the new up and coming popular girl. Due to her newfound fame, she was starting to click with Jess's clique that included Caitlyn. Even with her climb to popularity, the torment of Sonia Tylers and Mandy Jenkins did not stop.

     The next week, Leslie's parents came home and Leslie went back as well.

The night before the class's excursion to the museum that Jess had gone to before, he heard yelling from outside which made him look out the window. He could hear Bill and Leslie's voices all the way from their house which made him worry. It was the first time he had ever heard Bill's voice sound so furious. May Belle suddenly came in.

"That sounds like Leslie and her dad..." Her voice dropped as she walked to him.

"Yeah."

"Why're they yelling though?"

He shook his head in dismay. "I don't know," he said. "I'm sure it's fine." He took his eyes off of the Burke's house and went to bed, making May Belle go back to her own room. One thing's for sure though was that he was going to ask Leslie about it tomorrow.

On the way to the museum, Jess was unfortunately sitting next to Mandy Jenkins since there were no more seats available. He then noticed that in front of them were Arnold Bickerman, one of the geeks, and Leslie. She was sitting at the window seat, just in front of Jess. After a while, he noticed that Leslie was oddly quiet. Too quiet even with Mandy Jenkins taunting her from behind.

Leslie's head was leaning against the window, her hand supporting her head from hitting the window. He wasn't sure if she was sleeping or not so he just remained quiet and didn't bother her.

When they arrived at the museum and got off the bus, the teacher randomly picked out their partners for them. Ironically, Leslie and Jess became partners which was a relief for both of them.

While walking around the gallery with the class, Leslie suddenly asked if she could go to the toilet which the teacher allowed her to do so. After 10 minutes had passed, Jess realized that she hadn't come back.

He snuck away from the group and stationed himself across the girl's bathroom. Minutes later, Leslie came out, sniffling and rubbing her eyes which alerted Jess.

"Are you crying?"

Leslie jumped to his voice. "Gosh, you scared me!"

He patted her head in sympathy. She showed him a small smile and they later joined the class.

It was the same paintings he saw with Miss Edmunds 5 years ago. The museum added some new art, but mostly sculptures, and very few paintings. Room to room, floor to floor, he could remember him and Miss Edmunds entering and admiring all the pieces. It was sorta like an art haven for Jess at the time.

Once the excursion was over, they headed to Terabithia. It'd be a safer place for Leslie to tell him about the events last night.

"I told my dad about uncle Jason..."

"You did?!"

She nodded her head.

"And of course being the father he is, he got really mad."
