Only One I Call Home

I smiled. “But you’re not the one in charge of my case, so I’m fucked basically.”

He shrugged. “More or less. We’ll see how we go, hey?”

I left Rob to go and find my best friend in here; she’d latched onto me straight away. Bianca was in here for something much less delinquent than me but her parents were as strict as they come so they forced her to come in here to think about what she’d done. She was only in for six months and she was four months into her sentence so I was going to lose her sooner rather than later.

“How’d you go?” She asked me with a smile.

I shrugged. “It was okay, how are you?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve been better.”

“Do you want to go and get something to eat?” I asked her.

She nodded and together we walked towards the cafeteria in silence. We didn’t really have much in common apart from the fact that we both liked reading. The only problem was we enjoyed reading completely different things. I wasn’t sure why we were friends but we were. She was all I had.

We got our food and sat down at a table with what the chef called ‘spaghetti and meat balls’ to me it looked like tinned string with red sauce and minced marble looking things. Although it didn’t taste half bad, the smell and the presentation really put you off.

I scooped a spoonful into my mouth without looking at it and then smiled at Bianca. “So…”

She sighed. “Rob told me we’re getting fresh meat tomorrow. A guy, I think his names like Trace or something.”

I groaned. “I hate getting new people, more people to be wary of.”

“More people to tell your story to.” She added.

I nodded once. “Just ice him out.”

She nodded. “That’s cool with me. I don’t need any more friends; I’m out of here soon. You on the other hand, you should make some more alliances.”

I shook my head. “I don’t need friends. Rob is plenty. I’m not here to make friends. I’ll be fine, trust me.”

“While that might be true,” she started, “everyone else hates you. That might be a reason to make a new friend. Besides, there’s a fifty per cent chance that he’s hot. Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve even touched a boy…”?

I stopped listening after that I was watching everyone walk through the door of the cafeteria hungrily and scooping spoon after spoon of shit onto their plates. It was ridiculous how much some of these people ate.

Bianca snapped her fingers in front of my face. “You’re not listening to me.”

I just shook my head.

“Why?” She snapped.

I shrugged. “I don’t care what you have to say.”

She shook her head. “Wow, thanks L, thanks for the brutal honestly. I really respect that.”

I nodded. “No problem.”

She rolled her eyes. “Seriously though, you need to make a friend.”

“Maybe you should stop telling me what I need and focus on your own needs B.” I told her with a small smile.

She sighed. “I don’t like talking to you when you’re distracted. You can be rather nasty.”

I smiled. “Again, I don’t care.”

She shook her head. “You need to sleep, honey. You get cranky when you’re tired.”
