"Hello, can I help you?" A long dark haired woman asked you as you enter Pharmilian. "Yes, I need to speak to a Sharon Branca." You said. "That's me. What can I help you with?" Sharon asked. "I'm Sergeant (y/n) of Scotland Yard and I was wanting to ask you about Nina Malik." You said.
"Oh yes! I recognize you, you're the one who hangs around that doctor and the detective with the funny hat." She said and you laugh. "Yes, um...that's actually my husband, Sherlock Holmes." You replied.
"Oh wow...ok....Has something happened to Nina?" Sharon asked. "I'm afraid so, ma'am. Nina Malik has been murdered." You said. Sharon gasped and placed her hands over her mouth and said. "That's terrible news---I'm...." She trails off and looks off to the side.
"Let's talk in my office, Sergeant." She said and she gestures to a room off to the right and you follow her in. "I came here because I found a letter you wrote to her at her office, talking about her research." You said.
"We only met once, but her work was incredible. She was going to be a very rich woman. I realize you might suspect foul play, but believe me Sergeant, we had no reason to break the law: Pharmilian is in the fortunate position of being able to pay top dollar, so we don't need underhand tactics. And Professor Malik was going to sell, too. Ask her husband." Sharon exclaimed.
You nod at her and said. "I believe you. I just wanted to get your side of the story." She nods and you walk out of the room. "Thank you for your time." You said and texted Lestrade, asking him for Malik's address.
"Mr Toby Malik?" You asked as a short light brown haired man answer the door. "Yes?" He said. "Sergeant (y/n) Holmes. I'm here to ask you about your wife." You said. The man looks down sadly and opens the door wider. "Okay." He said and he walks out on the steps.
"Can you tell me about the last time you talked to your wife?" You asked him.
"We had a fight in the morning, before she went to work. She was always so unhappy. All she did was spend time in that lab. Her whole life was about 'the science!' I never really understood it, but there were companies offering millions to buy her research and I said it was worth considering. That was a mistake. She yelled and, well, the stress has been asking both of us crazy....we could have been retired by now. But she wanted the work to be perfect first, she wanted the glory, a Nobel Prize...I never got the chance to make up with her." He replied, dejectedly.
"So she had no desire to sell the research then?" You asked him. He shakes his head and You give him a sympathetic smile and said. "I'm so sorry for your loss, sir. But rest assured I will find out who did this." You said. "Thank you." He replied.
The grief seems genuine, but one can never tell. You thought as you start to walk out of the Malik's property until you saw their rubbish bin. It's a tabloid tactic, but it can turn up some useful dirt. You thought and you look around to make sure nobody was look and start to rummage in the bin.
What you found was a shredded letter with the Pharmilian logo on it. Hmmm, interesting. You thought and you head out towards the Yard.
You get to your desk and start to piece the letter back together. It was tedious but you managed to put the letter together and was able to read what it said:
Dear Toby,Thank you for your sympathetic ear. I just hope we can persuade Nina to be more flexible, for the good of all concerned. I know you're no scientist, but signing a deal would bring an amazing medical breakthrough to millions of people--not to mention giving the two of you complete financial freedom. But you're no the one I need to convince...
Let me know if there's anything more I can do to help.
Yours,
Sharon
"So Sharon and Mr Malik had their own little backchannel." You muttered to yourself as you hear footsteps approaching you. You look up and see Lestrade making his way towards you.
"We've taken a look at that computer from Nina's office and it's a wreck. Do you think you can take a crack at it? See if you can find anything useful?" He asked. "Of course Lestrade." You said and you follow him to his office and look over the computer and started to hack into it. You make it in and noticed that it said a potable storage device called Subiculum was dejected.
"Subiculum." You muttered. "What does that mean?" Lestrade asked. "Subiculum is a part of the brain involved in making short term memories." You said until something hits you. "Only one type of person would call their portable hard drive that: a neurologist, namely Grant Zubritski!" You exclaimed.
"Hold up, the assistant? You think he killed her?" Lestrade asked you. "Yes, he killed her and stole her research out of frustration at her refusal to sell. He decided to make some money out of it for himself. Of course, he needed to make sure he had the only copy, which meant destroying the lab's computers and the brain they had been experimenting on: hers. He didn't have time to remove it during the 'mugging', so he broke into the morgue." You said as you clapped your hands together.
"Oh for God's sake, if you're making this up..." Lestrade said and you look over at him. "C'mon Lestrade, you know me better than that. I promise you if you go pay a visit to Grant's house I'm positive you will find that Subiculum drive and, hopefully, you may recover the research." You said.
Lestrade nods and rounds up some men to head over to Grant's place while you head out and call Molly. "Thanks for all that! I'll start analysing this memory card nkw. It might take awhile--but I'll get back to you as soon as I have anything." Molly said after you explain to her what happened. "Thank you, Molly." You said and you start to head back home.
Once you make it back to Baker Street, you realize how unusually quite it is. You walk up the steps and head in towards the door but don't see Sherlock in his chair or in the kitchen. "Sherlock?" You said as you look around the living room. You then go upstairs to Victor's room only to find him gone.
Panicking, you run down the stairs and look around the flat until you go to yours and Sherlock's bedroom and open the door to see a sight that melts your heart. Sherlock Holmes laying on his back on his bed, eyes closed, with Victor laying over his chest, and Sherlock's right arm over Victor, holding him in place.
You smile and pull out your phone; you push the camera app, positioned your phone and took a picture. "Did you just take a picture?" Sherlock asked, softly. You smile and asked, playfully. "You got a problem with that?"
Sherlock opens his eyes and moves his head to look over at you and smirks. "After you left he started to cry, so I went to check on him. He didn't need a diaper change nor was he hungry but when I held him, he stopped crying so I rocked him for few minutes then I put him back in his crib but he started crying again. So I brought him here and he went straight to sleep." Sherlock said as you walk over to the other side of the bed and crawled next to him.
You lay your head on his chest and you lightly stroke your son's curls. "He's definitely going to be a Daddy's boy." You whispered and Sherlock chuckles. You look up at him and smile.
He smiles back and you lean in to give him a sweet loving kiss. You break the kiss and lean your forehead against his, your noses basically touching each other.
"If our son wasn't laying on my chest I would have you right now." Sherlock said, softly. You smile and said. "Maybe tomorrow. But right now it looks like our son just wants to be around you." Sherlock hums as he looks down at his son.
"I love you two, so much." Sherlock said. "I love both of you as well." You said and you go and kiss him again.
