Chapter 41: Mended Tears

"I know you're confused Keane and feeling vulnerable and strange okay. But that feeling will soon go," The doctor began, "You are in Sanno, a private hospital in Tokyo. You were involved in a serious traffic accident and your injuries were life threatening. We rushed you into theatre to try and save your spleen and stop the haemorrhaging from the internal bleed, caused from the impact of the crash. We successfully repaired your spleen by performing a partial splenectomy, so we had to remove part of your spleen. We did lose you for a second on the table, but have been keeping a close eye on you since and your heart is strong and the transfusion has been working,"

"Jesus," Keane whispered,

"You had a collapsed lung, a pneumothorax, caused from the 4 broken ribs. We weren't sure how fatal the puncture was, we had to insert a chest drain and everything seemed to be healing nicely. Surprisingly, you head was the least affected, though you had a minor fracture to the skull which caused some swelling of the brain, but that decreased significantly and left no lasting damage,"

"And, I'm still alive," Keane said, I couldn't help but smile,

"Finally, to end the list, you have severely fractured and shattered your left leg, which showed previous damage of a fracture and some muscular damage,"

"Just perfect," he mumbled, we all smiled at that remark,

"You had to have reconstructive surgery on your shoulder which you severely dislocated and we repaired damage from what looked like an old stab wound,"

"Had to go all out didn't I,"

"We placed you in a self-induced coma for 2 weeks whilst your body was working hard to heal itself and due to the severity of your ribs and pneumothorax you were on a ventilator, which we removed 4 days ago," Keane looked shocked,

"How is he doing though Doctor?" Rhina asked,

"Is everything on track?" Joey asked, "With the recovery," Keane began to groan, I clutched his hand,

"I will give you some morphine to ease your pain,"

"No" He said, "No..." Rhina looked at him,

"Baby boy, you've been receiving morphine for all of this time" She said,

"I don't want any more...you should know that...you should all know that," tears were rolling down his cheeks, he shut his eyes, the heart monitor was flying about all over the place,

"Keane, you need to calm down for me" the doctor said,

"I can't...it hurts so much, it hurts so much,"

"Keane...take it easy okay, look at me and only me," I said, he opened his eyes, I wiped away his tears, the doctor began a paracetomol drip to ease his pain and send him back to sleep, "Everything is going to be okay baby, I promise,"

A few minutes later Keane was asleep and I knew that we could defeat the pain, I knew that we were going to be okay.

"I will keep monitoring him and come back every few hours to see how he is doing. This is going to be a long hard recovery and there will be complications of the partial removal of his spleen. But I know that he is going to get through it, with a family like yours. If there are any changes, don't be afraid to page me," Arlo came into the room, a few minutes after the doctor had left,

"The doctor just said he woke up, is he okay?" Arlo said, relief in his voice, Noah and I looked at him, Rhina sighed,

"The next time Keane wakes up, we all need to have chat," She said,

"Are you finally going to tell them?" Arlo asked,

"I think it's about time,"
