It was an early Thursday morning and the hospital had been busy like it always was. I woke up to breakfast being cooked by Aaron, and today's menu happened to be eggs, bacon, and toast. I hadn't really believed that Aaron was serious about changing things but the past few days he was holding up to his promise. Being the doctor that I am meant that my meal was short-lived.
I looked down at my vibrating pager on my waist along with Aaron and Julia and it was the rarest of them all, a code orange. If there was anything I knew about code orange is that the situation wasn't going to be good. We quickly got dressed and made our way to the hospital.
We arrived only to find that there was not a mass casualty but there was a meeting that the CEO of our hospital was holding in regards to our hospital. I didn't think too much of it till the words " The hospital is closing" went into my ears.
I didn't get it bankruptcy how?
Our hospital was the best in Boston I practically grew up here, and it's all over. Walking out of the auditorium I never felt so confused. Neither Aaron nor Julia had very much to say about it but I was furious. I didn't understand how this could happen. The chief of the emergency department ordered that all charts be boxed and outside to be picked up by the hospital that would be receiving our patients. Everything was happening so fast. Regardless of the fact that our hospital would be no more by the end of the day I stayed focused and treated my patients.
"Hello Ms. Dorchester, I'm Dr. Robinson what brings you to the ER today?" I asked the patient
" I've been vomiting and I've had a headache throughout the day" she mumbled
I began examining her body her symptoms seemed like something that was severe but could be controlled considering the headache and vomiting.
" Does your stomach hurt when I press on the center, right, or left?" I asked
" My stomach is not what hurts...my head is" She whispered
" Does the light hurt your eyes or does the sounds around you hurt your head?" I asked her again
" The light hurts" She spoke softly
" Prior to your headache starting was there a ball of light that impaired your vision?"
" Yes it lasted no more than thirty minutes before the headache started" She explained
" On a scale of one to ten how bad is your headache?" I asked one last time
" A solid ten" She mumbled
" At this point, I am going to admit you and give you some acetaminophen and promethazine to ease your nausea and headache," I told her
She nodded her head and I exited her room updating her charts and ordered her medicine to be administered by the nurse. With this morning being as stressful and as busy as it was going to be and already was I surprisingly didn't have that many patients. I had examined Ms. Dorchester and admitted her, and my residents were all assigned to the remaining patients on our list.
The day was going to continue to be busy and stressful. The only difference was it was all of us doctors and nurses boxing paperwork and transferring patients to the nearest hospital from ours. To top it off we were under strict orders to stop receiving trauma patients that were coming via helicopter or ambulance, which I highly disagreed.
" Hey what's up," Aaron says sitting in an empty seat near me
" Nothing much, as you can see updating charts and doing paperwork before tonight," I spoke out of annoyance
