Hiding the weapons under her cloak, she moves swifly over the rooftops of Amaya, making sure that no one sees her. Finally feeling safe enough away from the mess, Abeke jumps down from the roof into an alley, landing on a crate before hitting the ground with a soft thump. Abeke pulls her hood up covering her face in shadows and makes her way into the flow of people shopping in the square, the noises of merchants shouting out deals and prices drowning out her steps. Moving like a shadow across the ground, Abeke side-steps into another alley, the rendezvous point with the person who employed her.
The woman who paid her was fidgeting nervously in the dark corner looking left and right.
"The Hunter did it," Abeke announces causing the woman to jump.
Her brown eyes widen and she looks around, "where is he?"
Abeke arches on eyebrow, why people always thought the Hunter was male was beyond her, "off on another business. As I said, I cover all the Hunters expenses. Pay up the remaining cash," Abeke says waiting for the woman to give her the sack of coins.
The metal pieces clink together when the lady drops them in Abeke's open hand, "now go. The Hunter doesn't like people seeing them," Abeke warns and the woman turns pale, nodding her head furiously before leaving in a hurry.
Abeke glances back at the retreating lady and stashes the money safely in her pack.
"So, who's this legendary Hunter," a female voice asks, shocking Abeke so much that she almost drops the sack. Abeke spins around to see a Zhongese Conqueror General standing exactly where the woman was before. Abeke mentally hits herself, it was a rookie mistake to not check for eavesdroppers.
Abeke raises her chin, "who?" she asks coldly.
"The Hunter," the girl repeats, "many people assume they're a male, but to carry out something with such precision involves a slight feminine touch."
Abeke shoulders her pack, "what are you looking for?"
"The Hunter, I have a job opportunity for them. A little street rat has been getting on my nerves and I need a strong cat to catch and not kill him."
"The Hunter only kills. One shot, one kill."
"I'll pay double," the girl offers showing a heavy looking pack, "I don't care what condition he comes to me in, as long as he breathes."
Abeke considers the offer, "I can... arrange something with the Hunter. They don't meet in person, I carry out their duties. Meet me at the Fox Den at exactly 6. Ask for the Fox Hole, the bartender will know. I'll explain more then," at that Abeke turns around and ducks away, moving to fast for the General to catch her.
A few hours later, Abeke eases the door open to the Fox Den, the sound of laughing and cheering men flooding out. Although the night just started, it seemed like many people were already pounding back drinks. Abeke weaves her way around the tables, stepping over sprawled out legs and deciding to not join into whatever drinking song was being sang off-key.
Abeke nods once to the bartender, letting him know that she was upstairs. Currently he was the only one to know that she was the Hunter, but Karmo knew what were to happen if her name was uttered out loud. Karmo waves before turning back to whoever was bugging him for some booze. Abeke removes her hood when she reaches the top, moving all the way to the end of the hallway to the last room. She was about ten minutes early, giving her enough time to figure out how she would engage in the conversation.
The offer was most definitely tempting, enough gold for her to quit her job and relax back in Nilo. But did she want to go back? Her tribe kicked her out, no way would they ever want her back.
A knock is heard from the door and Abeke opens it to see the Zhongese General, an impatient look in her eye.
"You look chipper," Abeke comments, stepping to the side to allow the girl in.
She doesn't answer instead entering the room and looking around, feeling the walls.
"You don't trust me?" Abeke questions closing the door.
"Why would I trust the Hunter after all she's done," the girl answers finally feeling satisfied that no one can listen in.
It takes a few seconds for what the General side to sink in, "you think I'm the Hunter?" She asks in disbelief.
The girl shrugs, "I believe so. Now, do you agree?"
"First off all, I'm not the Hunter," Abeke denys furiously. The last thing she needs is for people to know who she is, especially the Conquerors, "secondly, he said no," Abeke finally decides flatly.
"What do I have to offer to get you to do it?" The girl says.
"What do you have?" Abeke asks.
She shrugs, "any and all supplies that the Conquerors have. I know you're the Hunter, don't even bother denying it," the General adds before Abeke can interrupt, "but there's something else I need."
"So first you want me to not kill him," Abeke reminds her, finally deciding that there was no use denying the claims, "and now you have something else you need? I only kill."
The girl raises her eyebrow, "what I want is to go with you. I need to take back whatever that rat stole. I'll pay you double upfront and bonus when it's done."
Abeke sucks in a breath, that was way more money then she was expecting. What was the worst that happens? And if this girl decides to reveal who the Hunter is, Abeke can always just kill her.
"Fine," Abeke caves, "I'll work for you. But no one must know, and I want all charges against me removed."
The girl considers the offer, "you're lucky I'm desperate. Deal."
The pair shakes hands and Abeke asks one last question, "what's your name?"
The girl gives her a smile that belongs on a snake, "Meilin. Now, let's go catch a rat."
