"I'm sorry, (Y/N)," Wanda said, her voice sounded so strained.
You turned around in her arms and held her tight. "It wasn't your fault," you assured. "Steve's gone back inside buildings for all of us before. He knows the risk."
"She's right," Natasha said to Wanda.
Wanda looked at your face now, studying it. She knew you struggled every day with the thought that Steve might not return from a mission.
"Why don't we have some breakfast and then go see him?" you asked her, trying to make her feel better.
"Okay, I would like that," she said.
"Me too?" Natasha asked.
"Sure," you said, putting your arms around both of them. You felt like you had to be positive for them and it wasn't a stretch, you were feeling that way this morning.
***
Wanda, Natasha and you stood outside the sick bay and you knocked on the door. You heard a muffled "Come in" from the other side and opened the door slowly. You were so happy to hear his voice, it sent little chills through you.
"Good morning," you said, walking towards Steve, who was sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Good morning," he repeated. "I'm sorry... please remind me, what was your name again?"
"(Y/N)," you said. "This is Wanda and Natasha. They're on the team as well."
He gave them a nod and they said hello. Making small talk was hard as he seemed overwhelmed. He was too polite to say anything but you could tell. Bruce knocked at the window next to the door and motioned for you to join him. You excused yourself and let the three of them struggle to have a discussion.
"I trust your judgement, what do you think this morning?" Bruce asked, taking a bite of a donut.
"He doesn't seem better than yesterday, he seems like he might be feeling worse actually..." you said, very calmly.
"Well, he has a hell of a headache from the concussion," he confirmed. "He's probably pretty uncomfortable."
"Should I leave? Should I stay?" you asked.
"Why don't I have you all wait out here while I check on him? Just give me a few minutes."
With that, he went into the room and Wanda and Natasha came out. They sat down next to you and Wanda was very quiet. "He'll be okay," you said to her.
She shook her head at you. "No... I... I didn't mean to but... I accidentally read him," Wanda stuttered out. She looked at you both gravely.
"So you're a little stressed," Natasha said to her. "You didn't mean to."
"No... you don't understand..." Wanda said, looking down. You both watched her, giving her time to speak.
"I don't want to say it," she squeaked out.
You and Natasha looked at each other. "Say what?" Natasha asked. Your blood ran cold now.
"He's... he doesn't know you," Wanda said, looking at you. "He's thinking about a woman with dark hair. She's wearing an Army uniform."
"Oh," you said, "that's Peggy... oh..."
Natasha put her arm around you.
"Well, that's his old girlfriend," you said, "that makes sense, I guess."
Wanda leaned over and put her head on you and the three of you sat, waiting for Bruce, arms around each other.
Bruce came out into the hallway again. "Why don't you go in and talk to him?" he said to you. "Let me sit out here a few minutes and gather my thoughts."
