Chapter 5 - Crumbling

Start from the beginning

Something needed to feel like home tonight so you plopped on the bed and turned Ghost Whisperer back on. When the episode started, your chest tightened, your emotions started to bubble. It didn't immediately occur to you that it was for a reason other than Steve that you were so upset. "Oh..." you said out loud before picking up your cell phone.

"Wanda, can you come over?"

You paused the show and tried to catch your breath. The reason your emotions were so big right now was because you realized what episode this was. You needed Wanda, it was too much to handle alone. It was too close to real life for you...

(WARNING: Spoiler alert if you have not seen Ghost Whisperer... in case you're planning on watching it ever.)

You knew it was the episode where Jim got shot... Jim was the husband of the main character, Melinda. If you were honest about it with yourself, he reminded you of Steve, always supportive, always doing the right thing...

And the memories returned of what was coming next. Jim got shot, refused to pass over to stay with Melinda and then he jumped into a dying man's body. And then... he didn't know who Melinda was anymore. She knew Jim was in that body and she couldn't get him to see it and she couldn't do anything about it. It was just too close to real life for you.

When you heard a knock at the door, you were about to say come in but Wanda peeked in and then saw your face. Her mouth fell and she shut the door and rushed over to you. "I'm Sorry, I was upstairs watching a movie with everyone... Honey, what is it?"

You unpaused the tv and looked at it, then back at her. "Ohhhhh," she said, "Jim..." She sat down next to you and wrapped her arms around you, pressing her cheek against yours. Within seconds, you felt tears coming from her. The two of you were some pair and it made you let out a little giggle thinking about it. She joined in and then looked at you "I see why you called me, you can't watch this alone."

"This sums it up so perfectly... how I feel... I can't move on..." you started sobbing uncontrollably. "How can I get over him? - It's not like a breakup where I can hate him or where I don't have to see him everyday. He's here, he just doesn't know me, or not like he used to. He doesn't remember us."

Wanda's tears starting flowing freely now too. "It's hard, I see that it's hard for you. But you're so good with him, he trusts you." She stopped to look at you. "You can't see it but he trusts you."

"I just want his arms around me," you said. It came out in a low voice. You wiped away your tears and the two of you sat quietly and watched. It was cathartic and maybe just what you needed.

A few episodes and a few cries later, you were interrupted by another knock at the door. In unison, you and Wanda both shouted, "Come in!"

The door opened to reveal Steve standing there. "Come on in," you said to him, trying to act normal.

"Ladies," he nodded. He was carrying a notebook of some kind with him... or more accurately, once you took a better look, you realized it was his sketchbook.

Wanda got up off the bed, "I'll see you two later." You waved at her and stood up off the bed, stretching a little. You had been sitting for awhile. Steve looked away and it was then that you realized you still had your workout clothes on and maybe the spandex pants and tank top was more of you than he was used to seeing. At least lately, anyway.

"Can we talk?" he asked. He was using his serious tone and it made you nervous. You couldn't remember ever being on the receiving end of it.

"Sure, would you like to sit?" you offered the bed and moved back over to it to sit down once again.
