Ide and Mogi exchanged glances.

Matsuda shifted uneasily, not really liking the direction this seemed to be heading. Something was off, "Sure, we trust you, Aizawa...what's up?"

Of all people, Aizawa was the one he trusted most. Though trusting anyone seemed risky after Kira...After Light...

"We've got someone new coming in. Normally they'd have to work their way into this group, if they could..." The new chief saw his youngest friend waver, "The Rookie is connected to a friend of my wife, I'd be dead if something happens. How the kid got into this job...well, anyway, we're helping them settle in, got it? Teach them the ropes so they stay safe."

"Connected to a friend?" Matsuda raised a brow, "So, do you even actually know the kid?"

"We've met once or twice," Aizawa sighed, "Look, eventu-"

"And I'm gonna be the babysitter..." Matsuda frowned, used to being given the most demeaning tasks after so long.

"We're all going to help the kid learn on the job!" Aizawa glared slightly at his jaded friend, "I remember when making a new friend on the force would have excited you..."

Matsuda just lofted a brow. Shrugging he turned to the door, "I guess we have to see...not everyone's a friend, remember?"

His voice broke as it softened in reference to Light...to Kira. Clearing his throat he left the room, "I need some coffee..."

Aizawa watched him go before sighing in frustration, "He hasn't gotten over it...None of us has...but..."

"He was close to Light," Mogi finished, frowning, Ide agreeing with a nod.

"Damn. I miss the days when he was an idiot," The chief chuckled ironically, "And I never thought I'd say that..."

Matsuda had poured a nice steaming cup of coffee, hoping to at least give himself a boost, and was walking back to his desk. He hadn't been sleeping well, not that that was anything new in the last few years, and the dark skin beneath his eyes showed it. Well, at least he tried to sleep, unlike a certain genius detective from terrors past. He sighed wondering if he looked as strange with his sunken gaze as he once thought L had.

It was then that something unexpectedly crashed into his back and sent him stumbling forward, the contents of his cup sloshing over the sides and down the front of his shirt, "Gah!"

Whirling his free arm he tottered a moment and regained his balance before looking behind him. There he saw a young lady with [H/L], [H/C] locks that had been left disheveled when she'd run into him, leaving her falling back upon her rump as the contents of the box she carried had spilled across the the floor.

[Y/N] winced as she looked up to see who she had collided with, "Owww...."

Seeing a man standing there looking over his shoulder at her, she went crimson in humiliation, "Ah! I...I...umm...s-sorry...chief's office...hurrying...kablam!"

Great, she was doing that nonsense babbling plus sound effects that she collapsed into whenever she figured someone was judging her! The man blinked his brown eyes and turned to face her, revealing the damp coffee stain on his shirt and tie.
