Chapter 36: Rest Your Head

"Yes, Y/n," Pearl and Amethyst groaned as they turned around begrudgingly

As Y/n finished getting dressed their phone buzzed loudly from a text message. Y/n sighed as they picked up their phone and checked their messages

"Who could be messaging you at this time?" Pearl frowned

"Uh..." Y/n frowned as they read the text

Steven: Hey

Steven: U awake?

Steven: I cant sleep.

Steven: The gems arent here can i come over to ur house?

You: Amethyst and Pearl are here, don't think Pearl is gonna be too happy if I say yes...

Steven: Really? Man, i knew it was 2 good. Is Pearl coming back?

"Are you going back to the temple?" Y/n asked

"Are you talking with Steven?" Pearl frowned

"...Depends," Y/n said

"On what?" Pearl asked

"If he'd be in trouble or not if I said yes," Y/n told

"Why would he be hypothetically messaging you?" Pearl pushed

"He hypothetically is having trouble sleeping," Y/n said, "And hypothetically wants to come over,"

"Then hypothetically, he would not be," Pearl said

"Okay, then I am texting Steven," Y/n told

"...Tell him to have Garnet walk him over," Pearl sighed

You: Good news and bad news

Steven: Bad news first?

You: U got caught

Steven: and the good news?

You: Pearl says to have Garnet walk you over, you can stay the night

Steven: AWESOME!!!11! Ill go find Garnet!

"He's coming," Y/n said as they set down their phone, "I'll go wait downstairs for him,"

"Might as well come with," Amethyst told

"As will I," Pearl said as she followed Y/n and Amethyst down the stairs

Y/n grabbed a folding chair from the back of the small shop and flipped it open. Y/n sat down and yawned as they watched out the order window waiting to see Garnet and Steven approach, "Why do you think Steven wants to come over if he can't sleep?" Amethyst asked

"Last time he had trouble sleeping he came over and I sang him a song and he fell right asleep on the couch," Y/n told

"Aw," Pearl smiled, "You'll have to teach me that song for the future,"

"You can listen in if he asks me for it," Y/n said

"I would appreciate that," Pearl nodded, a smile still plastered on her face

"I've brought Steven," Garnet announced as she walked through the door without anyone noticing. Steven stood next to her in his pajamas.

"Oh, hey Steven," Y/n smiled, "Can't sleep, huh?"

"Nope," Steven sighed as he held MC Bear Bear

"That's okay," Y/n assured, "Let's go upstairs, alright?"

"Okay!" Steven smiled as he followed Y/n upstairs. Once he got upstairs he grabbed the blanket on the couch and laid down

"You can share the bed with me if you want," Y/n offered

"I like the couch," Steven smiled as the rest of the gems climbed the stairs, "...Can you do the song again?"

"Sure," Y/n laughed sweetly as they knelt down and put their hand on Steven's head. Y/n began humming the opening tune to the short song.

"Shh, listen. Listen," Pearl whispered noisily to the silent Gems

"Go to sleep, rest upon your bed, may this night bring dreams to your head," Y/n sang softly, "Hear my voice, never let it die. Keep this lullaby. Soon the sun shall set on. Long it will be till dawn, never from you will I be gone. Carry on, rid this world of fear, now the time is near. Peace will soon reign here..."

"Mmm," Steven hummed happily as he closed is eyes and snuggled into the blanket, holding MC Bear Bear tightly.

"Night, bud," Y/n whispered as they stood up slowly, "Night, you guys,"

"Good night," Garnet spoke softly as she made her way downstairs

"O-oh, right... Yes, good night," Pearl snapped out of her trance as she cautiously went for the stiars

"You even knocked me out," Amethyst laughed a bit as she stretched and climbed into Y/n's bed

"Sleep well," Y/n said to Amethyst as they climbed in as well and threw the blanket over their body

"You too," Amethyst mumbled as she closed her eyes.

Y/n closed their eyes and let sleep gently take them into peace, reassured by the soft breathing of Amethyst next to them and the soft snore of Steven. The wholesome felling that balled up in Y/n's chest seemed to leak out and infect every part of their body with a warm tingling sensation they had never felt before. Though unconscious, Y/n's mind couldn't help but wish this moment could last for all of eternity. The hours seemed to melt by like seconds, only for Y/n's mind to be called forward by a soft touch to their head

"Go to sleep, rest upon your bed," A familiar feminine voice sang in almost a whisper, "May this night bring dreams to your head. Hear my voice, never let it die. Keep this lullaby. Soon the sun shall set on. Long it will be till dawn, never from you will I be gone. Carry on, rid this world of fear, now the time is near. Peace will soon reign here..."

"Perfect..." Y/n mumbled as they lifted their hand to meet with the cold, slim fingers on their scalp

"Oh... Did I wake you?" The soft voice whispered

"Shh," Y/n hushed, "Is okay..." Y/n said as they took the hand into theirs and held it softly.

"I like this..." The soft voice told

"I do too," Y/n spoke softly, "G'night,"

"Yes... Good night, Y/n," The soft voice said
