Though, this case had changed that. It had changed you.
You were afraid and it was showing.
''(Y/N),'' he spoke as the cab slowed to a stop.
You turned to him, a hazy look in your eyes.
''I can do this interrogation myself if you need me to. You don't have to face him. I know you're affected by what happened.''
''No,'' you said firmly. ''I have questions and I need answers. I'm interrogating him myself.''
Sherlock knew he wouldn't be able to change your mind, you were too determined. ''We'll do it together, but before we go in, you need to get a grip on your feelings. You can't show you're afraid.''
''I'm not afraid.''
He shot you a pointed look. ''Your make up is slightly smudged. It's not perfectly applied as it normally is because you're distracted. Ever since you got up this morning, your hands have been shaking and sweating profusely. I felt it when I took your hand earlier. During this car ride, you –''
''Alright, I get the message!'' you cut him off. ''Maybe I am afraid. Is that what you want to hear? I'm afraid I'm way out of my league here and won't be able to beat the son of a bitch who caused me and my family so much hurt!''
He placed his hand on your shoulder, squeezing lightly. He forced you to look at him. ''You're not out of your league, (Y/N). You're one of the best detectives the world has to offer. If anyone can take Moriarty down, it's you. Well, and me, of course. You're not taking all the credit.''
You smiled softly at him and nodded. ''Thanks for the pep talk, I needed that.''
''I know.'' He took your purse and handed the cabbie his fee. He tossed it back to you and stepped out of the vehicle.
''Sherlock,'' you stopped him.
He turned to look at you, his hand on the door.
Nerves coursed through you as a faint blush coated your cheeks. You couldn't help but let your smile grow. ''I love you.''
Sherlock froze, his knuckles turning white as he tightly gripped the door. He stared right at you, his face not moving a muscle. His entire expression read surprise, but his eyes showed something more.
Slowly, he turned back to reality. He blinked and inhaled a shaky breath. ''Right,'' he stammered out. ''That's good, yes. That's good.''
You felt your face grow hot. You felt so overwhelmed by your emotions, you had blurted it out without giving it much thought. Now you were regretting it. You looked down. ''I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. Forget I said anything. We need to focus on the case.''
He grabbed your arm once you made it out of the cab. His gaze was intense yet soft.
You saw the struggle in his eyes and smiled at him. ''It's okay. You don't have to say anything you don't feel ready to.''
He nodded, letting go of your arm. ''Thank you.''
You entered the building, Sherlock following you but keeping a slight distance. You stood in front of Lestrade's office. ''We're ready when you are,'' you announced.
''Right!'' he exclaimed, gathering some papers. ''I suppose I should just leave the interrogation to you two. You're more involved in this case than I am. I'll just be in the room looking useful.''
Sherlock snorted. ''As always, Graham.''
You soon found yourself standing behind the glass, staring at the criminal. You could feel the fear bubbling back to the surface. You fought hard to push it down, but it still showed.
