''Yes?'' You encouraged.

His slender fingers slowly moved to his pocket. He looked at the velvet box in his hand and then back up at you. ''I want this night to be perfect, (Y/N). Our third anniversary and all you have done is bring me happiness and joy.''

You giggled. ''You said that already and it is perfect, Sherlock. Don't worry about that.''

''Yes, but I want to make it even more special. I want this night to represent how much I love you, and words just don't seem good enough to express that.''

''Now, you're making me nervous.''

''Don't be.'' He smiled. He rose from his seat and walked around the table.

You followed his every move with your eyes as you sat frozen in your chair. ''What are you doing?'' You whispered.

''What I have been wanting to do since day one.'' He got down on one knee and revealed the small box.

Tears prickled your eyes as your mouth opened in shock. The only thing you could do was stare at the man in front of you and breathe shakily. Your hand covered your mouth as you looked into his eyes. ''Sherlock,'' you croaked.

''No, please, let me talk first. I have so much to say.''

You nodded. ''Okay.''

''When we met, I was completely and utterly lost. My life had no sense of direction and it just seemed meaningless and unworthy. I had no motivation to live or to die, I was just a-a walking human shell.'' He paused, swallowing a few times and blinking to suppress the evident tears in his eyes. ''But then I met you,'' he sniffed, smiling through the tears that were no falling freely from his eyes. He couldn't keep it together and it made you start to cry softly into your hand. ''And you lit up my entire being. You drove the madness away from my mind and showed me that everyone- even me- was worthy of love and a place in this world. You made me feel valuable, you completed me and above all, you never stopped seeing the good in me. You didn't run away when I revealed my darkest secrets nor did you see me any differently. You showed me what love was and how absolutely wonderful it is to be in love, and I cannot thank you enough for that. And I want to show my gratitude in more ways than expensive dinners, gifts and endless love confessions. I want a ring on my finger and on yours. I want to show the whole entire world what you mean to me and I truly hope you feel the same way.'' His trembling hands opened the lid and revealed a silver ring with a shining sapphire embedded into it. ''(Y/F/N), will you marry me?''

A sob escaped your lips as you nodded furiously. ''Yes,'' you cried. ''Of course, yes!''

He smiled brightly and placed the ring on your finger before pulling you in for a long kiss. All around you, people were clapping and whistling, happy to have been a part of the engagement, but neither of you cared.

You only had eyes for each other, a cloud of happiness blocking all the horrible and the unnecessary.

There's no religion that could save me

No matter how long my knees are on the floor, oh

So keep in mind all the sacrifices I'm making

To keep you by my side

To keep you from walking out the door

Sherlock opened his eyes and inhaled shakily. Tears streamed down his face as he dropped his head in his hands. He had passed out again, and as a result, he dreamt.

To most, dreaming was an escape – a different reality where nothing can harm you. Dreams were a wonderful thing, but not to Sherlock Holmes, not anymore.
