Jason sighed as a few stray tears fell down his face. He slowly put a hand on the gravestone, allowing his eyes to skim over the engravings.
Richard "Dick" Grayson
Son
Brother
Friend
Leader
HeroJason sighed once again.
"You really are a hero Wing-nut... I'm proud of you. And don't worry, I'll keep an eye on our little 'family' for ya."
A bright light shone behind him and he slowly turned around...
And there was Dick, bathed in a gold heavenly light... with a man and a woman behind him. The couple were smiling and holding hands.
Dick said nothing instead he and Jason maintained eye contact for a few moments until Dick broke out in a grin and nodded his head. Then in a blast of light the apparitions were gone and it was just Jason again.
He didn't utter a word as he pulled his hood back up. He understood.
After one last glance at the gravestone he silently turned and headed to Bludhaven.
Damn Golden Boy thought Jason Even when you're dead you're thinking about other people.
Ever since that night, whenever someone from any team, or anyone Dick knew for that matter, was having trouble either with a mission or personal life, a robin would always show up.
Sometimes it would sing a song or just sit there in silence when one was struggling in life or it would fly above them during the mission.
Whatever way the robin appeared and under whatever circumstances, the robin always gave them hope and encouragement to push through.
It's like... like he wasn't really gone. Like his spirit was never broken.
A few years passed and Wally and Artemis finally did get married. And then they had a baby boy.
As the happy couple were admiring their child Wally looked out the window and pointed something out to his wife.
A robin perched on the windowsill, happily chirping away a tune. Wally slowly opened the window, afraid he might scare away the bird.
But the robin merely hopped on into the room and perched near the little baby. Artemis and Wally were silent until...
"Dick..." breathed Wally.
The robin looked away from the baby and looked at Wally. Then let out a little chirp in reply.
Tears flowed down the couple's faces but the robin just flew up to land on Artemis's shoulder and rubbed her cheek with its head then did the same to Wally.
Wally offered his finger to the little bird and it happily climbed aboard and continued its little tune it was previously singing.
"Dick..." said Artemis.
The robin continued its song.
"Will you... will you look after our son? Like his godfather?"
Wally's breath hitched as the robin abruptly stopped singing and spread its wings. It flew down to the little baby.
It nuzzled its cheek as well. Both Artemis and Wally smiled. That was all the answer they needed.
The robin chirped one last time before flying back out the window.
Wally closed the window just in time as a nurse with a clipboard came in.
"So have you any ideas on names?" she asked with a smile.
Wally looked at his wife who smiled and nodded in return.
He turned back to the nurse.
"Yeah. Richard. Richard John West. Dick for short."
The nurse wrote down the name and quickly left to leave the new family alone.
Wally touched his son's face which caused the child to open his eyes for the first time.
Both parents looked in awe at his eyes.
A mother with silver eyes and a father with green eyes...
It was truly a miracle that the child was blessed with baby blue eyes.
