Chapter Twenty Two

Start from the beginning

"Although most people would apologize for ruining my shirt." He jested trying to get her to smile. She didn't even crack a grin, but she made a show of rolling her eyes and pushing him away.

It was a start, and he could work with that.

"Where do you want to go now?" Wally inquired. "I can take you back home if you don't want to see my handsome face again."

"I'd rather not be alone." That's a first, he'd always known her to prefer solitude.

On a completely unrelated note, Wally noticed she didn't deny that he was handsome.

"Besides, home is the last place I want to go. I don't know what to tell my mom because she will sense something is up the second I walk through the door. I just need more time to think things through." She sighed, looking as drained as she felt.

"That's understandable, and I have just the place to get your mind off of everything." Wally replied knowingly.

"An ice cream shop?" Artemis asked incredulously standing outside. "How does this help anything?"

"Well a wise man once said you can't buy happiness but you can buy ice cream which is the same thing." He led her inside, holding the door open for her like a true gentleman. "You just have to believe Arty."

"We've already been here before." She acknowledged. Wally nodded in agreement. It was the same ice cream shop they went to when she told him about Roy, and where they got into an argument over paying.

"Just because the novelty has worn off shouldn't turn you away from the ice cream, I mean did you even taste it last time?" This was one of the best ice cream places in Gotham, and Wally is the type of person who would try each and every one. And he has.

"Come on, it's my treat Artemis." She didn't budge from her seat. He sighed, it was time to get drastic. "Get anything you like." He phrased it like a challenge knowing she would never back down. He knew her better than she thought.

"You are going to regret that." She was probably right, but Wally couldn't bring himself to care.

**

In the end it took both of them to carry Artemis' order of ice cream. She certainly took him up on his offer.

"Any regrets?" She taunted him, spooning a scoop of chocolate ice cream in her mouth.

Wally shook his head, content with his single scoop. Ok, maybe content wasn't the right word. He was dealing with having enough money to buy himself a single scoop. On the other hand, Artemis had a bowl overflowing with ice cream and toppings. There was no debate this time on who was paying.

"You sure?" She asked waving a spoonful at him. Wally nodded his head, eating his own plain scoop slowly. "I don't believe you." Artemis told him. "You love ice cream." He loved all types of food really, he wasn't picky.

"Who doesn't love ice cream?" He shrugged.

Artemis sat back perplexed. "How are you so calm about this, I expected you to already snekk a bite in by now."

"You need it more than me today." He answered simply. She went through a lot today, and the least Wally could do was get her ice cream big enough to forget all other problems. One of his life mottos was to drown all troubles with food.

Artemis pushed her chair back, the sound of metal scraping against the wooden floor deafening. Wally watched confused as she wordlessly walked up to the counter and grabbed an extra spoon.

"Here." She handed it to him. "I can't eat all of this myself." Artemis slid the bowl so it was an equal distance between the both of them.

"I guess it's not too late to sneak in a piece." Wally did not hesitate to devour his own ice cream first, before taking her up on the offer. He tried to refrain from cramming the whole thing in his mouth for her sake.

He doubted she was ready to witness it.

"Are you ready to talk about it?" Wally asked her a few minutes later. Artemis was swirling her spoon in the rapidly melting ice cream.

"I don't know if I want to."

"I'm here for whenever you feel like it. Just know that you have people who care about you. Jade and Roy did keep secrets from you which is hurtful, but doesn't the fact that they stayed so close to you mean anything? Perhaps your sister wasn't ready to reach out to you completely, only keeping a watchful eye from afar. You have a right to be upset over what happened today, you have a right to be angry for her for as long as you want. And when it's over, you'll have to face her again eventually. We blindsided them today with our impromptu meeting, but you should at least give them a second chance. You owe it to yourself."

"I'll think about it."

"That's all I'm asking." She's come a long way and for that Wally was proud. He just wished he could express his feelings towards her, but he knew she wasn't ready or looking for a relationship.

That won't stop him from trying.
