Mom stood up and walked to the stage, giving Ian another microphone so I could use the other one. I gulped as I enveloped the microphone around my hands. Oh God, I’m singing. I’m singing in front of people. And, worst of all, I’m singing with the guy I love.
Good God.
My hands were so sweaty and I was a little bit nervous that microphone might slip on my hands. That would be so embarrassing.
Anyway, Evan returned with the keyboard. He plugged it on and after a few minutes, he was ready to play.
And before I knew it, Ian started singing.
“The stars lean down to kiss you And I lie awake and miss you Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere. ‘Cause I’ll doze off safe and soundly But I’ll miss your arms around me I’d send a postcard to you, dear ‘Cause I wish you were here.”
He paused and looked at me, smiling comfortingly. “Are you okay?” he mouthed as Evan played the keyboard.
“I’m going to kill you,” I mouthed back. Then it was my turn.
"I'll watch the night turn light-blue But it's not the same without you Because it takes two to whisper quietly. The silence isn’t so bad ‘Til I look at my hands and feel sad ‘Cause the spaces between my fingers Are right where yours fit perfectly. I’ll find repose in new ways Though I haven’t slept in two days ‘Cause cold nostalgia Chills me to the bone.”
“But drenched in vanilla twilight I’ll sit on the front porch all night Waist-deep in thought because When I think of you I don’t feel so alone…”
The both of locked eyes and as if we rehearsed the song, we sang together, “I don’t feel so alone, I don’t feel so alone. As many times as I blink I’ll think of you tonight I’ll think of you tonight.”
Then he smiled at me, his eyes saying it’s my turn to sing solo. “When violet eyes get brighter And heavy wings grow lighter I’ll taste the sky and feel alive again And I’ll forget the world that I knew But I swear I won’t forget you Oh, if my voice could reach Back through the past I’d whisper in your ear…”
Then he joined me for the finale: “Oh darling, I wish you were here.”
Everybody howled and clapped and when Evan was done, he joined the audience.
And something happened that I wasn’t imagining in a million years.
Ian went down to one knee.
He looked up at me.
He grabbed my hands.
And then said, “Victoria Violet Strauss, will you be my girlfriend?”
Everybody gasped and I glanced at Evan. He was smiling and nodding at me. I glanced at Miranda. She mouthed, “It’s up to you.” Then I glanced at my brother and Suzanne. They nodded their approval.
And finally, I glanced at my mother. She smiled at me comfortingly and pointed at her heart then to her head. She’s telling me one simple message: If my heart and mind agrees with each other, then it’s true love.
I glanced back at the guy who was looking up at me lovingly. And I know, in that moment, that my heart and my mind was saying the same thing for the first time.
And so I took a deep breath and said:
“Yes.”
Everybody cheered and howled but I didn’t hear anything. Instead, the only thing that matters to me was the guy in front of me—my boyfriend—as he stood up slowly and gave me a breathtaking smile. His eyes burned to mine as he leaned closer and gave me a small kiss on my lips. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” I whispered back, sighing contentedly as he engulfed me into a hug.
Everything was just perfect. Nothing is going to stop us now. Nothing is going to be wrong in my life now. Because I know I made a right turn.
But it was later when I realized how wrong I am.
