Chapter 8:

"My name is Four." She laughs

"Four like the number?" She asks.

"Exactly like the number." He says.

"What were 1 through 3 already taken?" she smirks.

"What's your name?" He asks Chris.

"Christina" she smiles. He walks up to her so that he is in her face. " Well Christina, first lesson I teach you is learn how to keep your mouth shut. Got it?" he asks. " yes" she says quietly. I have never heard a candor be so quiet. He starts walking and we follow. We get to two double doors at the end of the hallway " This is the pit" he says opening the doors. We are all amazed when we see how big and amazing it is.

" This is the center of life is in dauntless. You can come here to go to a tattoo parlor, shop, and anything you can think of. This will be like your second home here in dauntless, so respect it." With that we walk out. We start walking away and I hear roaring waters. We walk down another hallway and it reveals this beautiful but dangerous river. " This is the chasm, it reminds us that there is a fine line between idiocy and bravery. Take one leap off and it will end your life. It has happened and will happen again." I suddenly feel someone push me and I scream. I grab onto the rails of the chasm, hanging on for dear life. I feel strong arms pull me up. I am over the rails when I collapse to the ground, breathing heavily. I look up and see Four is the one who saved me. He pushes Peter against a wall and says " the second thing I teach you is that you never try to take someone's life. It shows that you are a weak, coward. Are you scared of the stiff? She is obviously stronger and faster than you are so you must be intimidated by her. What you just did also violates what we believe in dauntless. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another. Pull another stunt like that and I guarantee you will become factions. Got it?!" He asks.

Peter nods his head up and down.

Four comes over and helps me up.

"are you okay?" He asks. I nod my head. We start walking through hallways for another five minuets when we get to another room full of bunk beds. " This is your dorm." He says

He explains how we will buy things in Dauntless with our store credits.

"Come to the cafeteria in 5 mins.

With that he walks out I pick a bottom bunk next to Christina's. I am sharing one with Al and she is sharing with an Erudite boy that I think is named Will.

We get ready and walk to the cafeteria.

All of the initiates, including me walk through the doors of the cafeteria and the Dauntless automatically begin cheering. I walk over to a table with Christina, Will, and Al. When we get there I notice that Four is also there. I know that I should be intimidated by him , but instead I feel like I am safe.

I see This meat that I do not recognize on the table. I stab it with my fork and put it onto my plate. " Have you never seen a hamburger before?" She asks like I am crazy. " I have seen one, I've just never eaten one." Her eyes widen.

"Stiffs eat plain food." Will says.

" I'm surprised you even eat at all, to selfish right?" She says. Will rolls his eyes. "What?" she asks defensively.

"You have no filter. You says the first thing that comes to mind." He says.

"At least we tell the truth!" she says.

They continue to bicker like an old married couple when Four says " put This in it. It helps." I smile and take the ketchup from him. " Thanks." After a while, a man covered in tattoos and piercings walks up and sits down next Four. Four rolls his eyes, I can tell he does not want him here. " Hey Four, Max told me to come and ask you if you wa-" Four cuts him off and says "No Eric, I do not want a government job, and I never will." He says sternly. "Fine" the man, Eric, says, but I can tell he looks relieved. " So Four, Are you going to introduce me to your new friends?" He asks. Four sighs and says this is Tris, Christina, Will, and Al.

Initiates, this is Eric, he is a leader in Dauntless and will be overseeing your training." Four says.

" Ooh a stiff, lets see how long she lasts." I scowl at him. I have know him for 2 minuets and already hate him.

As I am eating Max calls for our attention. We all look at him as he says " imitates rise." we stand up and Max continues

" We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another. Respect that and do us proud. " Right when he finishes we our lifted up by the dauntless. They pass us around and all I can think is

I made the right choice.
