"What's going on?" I demanded.
Thomas was blushing for some reason, and the stranger was snickering at him. "Well..," Thomas began, but got cut off.
"I'm sorry, mademoiselle. Je'mappelle Lafayette. I lived in France, but I'm moving to America, and I don't have a place to stay. Thomas was kind enough to let me stay here. We're friends, you see."
I smiled at Lafayette. Luckily I knew a tiny bit of French, so I knew what he was saying. "Je'mapelle Y/N," I said in French to make it easier for him.
He smiled. "Nice to meet you."
"All right, guys," Thomas hurried our conversation along. "I'm tired, so let's just give him a room already."
***
I woke up, remembering that Lafayette would be staying with Thomas. Me and Thomas had already planned to hang out that day, so Laf would be joining us.
I didn't mind. He seemed like a nice person.
I arose, got dressed, brushed my hair, and headed downstairs. Thomas and Lafayette were already downstairs, sipping coffee.
Thomas smirked. "Good morning, sunshine." He gestured to a nearby grandfather clock with his thumb. "It's 12:00."
"Oh, no..," I said to myself. "I'm really sorry, guys. I'll finish getting ready right now."
Laf waved me off. "It's okay. I was starting to worry, though."
I knew that Lafayette only meant the best. That he wanted me as a friend, and not a partner. But, unfortunately, Thomas didn't see it the same way.
"Lafayette, you have nothing to worry about," he said sharply. "That's my job. She is my girlfriend, after all."
Lafayette seemed oblivious as to what Thomas was trying to say without actually saying it. Laf glanced between the two of us. After a bit, he said sincerely, "Congratulations! You guys make an amazing couple!"
Thomas pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head. "That's not what I meant..."
"How about I just get ready?" I interrupted.
The two men nodded.
I finished getting ready, and we sat down with a board game. "Trouble," to be precise. (I know that "Trouble" wasn't around then, but let's make believe that it was.)
"Ooh! You picked my favorite, Thomas!" I squealed, clapping my hands.
Thomas looked at Lafayette and smirked. Laf just rolled his eyes, crossing his arms.
I started to catch on to what was happening. "Thomas?" I asked.
He looked at me with those striking brown eyes. "Hm?"
"Can I talk to you for a minute?"
He nodded, standing up and following me into the kitchen.
Once we got there, I said, "You do realize that Laf isn't trying to take me from you right?"
Thomas shook his head, crossing his arms and growling lowly. "You're so oblivious. He's all over you!"
I shook my head too. "He's worried about me in a brotherly way, Thomas. Don't worry, I won't let anything like that happen." That's when I realized that he called me oblivious. "Wait...hey!"
Thomas chuckled.
"There's the smile," I grinned.
He put an arm around me, guiding me back to the living room. "Okay...I trust you."
Lafayette was waiting for us when we came back. "Is everything all right, amis?"
Thomas and I nodded. "Yep," we said simultaneously.
Then we played "Trouble." I won, obviously. The two guys sucked.
"Yes!" I cheered.
Grunts of defeat came from the two men. "Whatever..," Thomas said under his breath, while Laf shook his head and mumbled inaudible words to himself.
Maybe having Laf near me all the time would be fun.
