Levi's POV:
"Tch, this brat is absolutely disgusting." I say as I wash her clothes. They were covered with stains and smelled foul, as if they hadn't been cleaned in months. I remembered the state their trashy apartment was in and it made me feel sick. I never liked going in there because of how disgusting it was but I wasn't the kind of person who'd abandon a friend who needed my help. I had noticed a young girl living there and felt sorry for her, having to live in such a dump but I always tried to get out of there as fast as possible so I never really thought about it much until now. She's in my care and I just have to make sure she never gets to that point again. I finish cleaning the clothes after some time and head back to my room with them, I listen to see if she was still awake and heard nothing. I opened the door and walked into my bedroom to find the brat passed out cold on the bed, she was at least clean so I felt a little more relaxed. I took a good look at her sleeping form as I set down her clothes and noticed how fragile she looked, she looked like she hadn't had enough to eat for a while and she looked defeated even in her sleep. I felt pity for the poor girl, she looked like she had seen her fair share of hell and for someone so young, I almost couldn't take it. I promised myself right then and there that I would try my best to be there for her, I didn't know why I felt the urge to protect her as much as I did, I knew I had made a promise to protect her and I intended to fulfil that promise until the bitter end but I felt like there was something more to it. I eventually let my thoughts slide and went to my desk to try and tackle the mountain of paperwork I always seemed to have on my desk.
Reader's POV:
I don't know how long I slept for, but it wasn't long enough. I woke up with the sun's blazing light in my face. I turned around to avoid having to face it any longer when I noticed that Levi wasn't in his room. Despite how bright the light was, I knew it was still early morning. I didn't want to get up, but I felt that I would be scolded if I didn't so I forced myself out of bed. I noticed my clothes were laying nearby, perfectly folded and cleaned as if they were brand new. "This is a surprise," I mumbled to myself. I picked up the outfit on top, it was my [f/c] dress. One of the few things I was able to keep. I took off the loose fitting clothes that I had borrowed in favor of my dress. Somehow, having it so nice and clean made me feel a little better. Although I was still upset, I knew if I didn't do something I'd have to deal with his bitching and I was not in the mood to be scolded today.
After cleaning up in the bathroom I actually looked at myself for the first time in a long time, it was the same as usual but being all clean like this reminded me of when my mom used to help me get ready, and it stung a little to think about it now. I walked out of the room and into Levi's office where I found him fast asleep sitting at his desk. It looked as if he had fallen asleep doing paperwork with a half empty cup of tea at his side. I didn't want to disturb him as he seemed exhausted so I started to head out the door when I heard a voice behind me saying "Isabelle... no" I was caught off guard, I turned around to face the sleeping figure only to see his face contorted into a painful expression, he looked as if he was going to burst into tears. Eventually he once again broke the silence by yelling "NO" and his eyes flew open as his face fell hard onto the desk with a loud thud which caused me to jump a bit in surprise. As fast as his head hit the desk it came back up, he was breathing hard and trying to calm himself when he noticed me out of the corner of his vision. "What are you staring at brat?" he asked. I shook my head, "Nothing sir, I was just about to leave when you started shouting." If looks could kill, the glare he gave me would have ended me on the spot. "Tch, so after sleeping for three days straight you finally decide to do something?" I was bit shocked, I didn't think I had been asleep for that long. Following this, my stomach growled and I finally realized just how hungry I really was. I blushed a little, embarrassed at the noise when Levi stood up from his desk and walked towards me saying "Oh so you finally want to eat huh? Fine I'll take you to the mess hall, I need some more tea anyways." I timidly followed along, afraid that if I took one wrong step he'd snap at me again. We made it there after a tense silence and he led me to where the food was and then walked away. I decided to grab what I felt I could eat and sat in the corner of the empty room. Soldiers started filing in and grabbing their morning meal but I paid them little mind, I twirled my utensils around lost in thought for a while taking small bites here and there. When I looked up Levi was standing in front of me with his arms crossed, he looked disapprovingly at me and said "So that's it? You know you need to eat more than that." All I could do was look back down since I didn't really WANT to eat, but I knew I had to. He sat down across from me and said "Look if you're upset, I understand but you need to eat. I mean if you REALLY want me to I can force you to eat it but I doubt either of us wants that." I managed to choke down what was left following his threat and although his expression never changed he seemed to be satisfied with that somehow.
After washing the dishes I had used I decided to go on a walk to sift through my thoughts. Just as I was about to step out I came across my new guardian and he eyed me before asking "Now where exactly are you planning on going?"
"Why do you need to know?"
"Well I AM supposed to protect you, I can't very well do that if I don't know where you are."
"I was going to go on a walk. I need to do something or I'll just get even more depressed." I whispered quietly. "Fine, just be back before it gets dark, I have things to do and worrying about you is something I don't need right now." He continued to glare at me a few seconds more before walking away to take care of whatever it was he needed to do. I didn't really care what it was, I just wanted to get out of there for a while.
The sun was high in the sky now and everyone on the grounds was doing something, I continued walking out towards the road when I was once again stopped but this time by a young girl with orange hair. She smiled at me and asked, "Are you [f/n]?" I nodded in response. "Oh, I heard that Captain Levi took in a young girl recently and I was pretty surprised. It's not like him to take care of someone like that. I'm Petra by the way, I'm a member of Captain Levi's squad."
"Nice to meet you Petra."
"Oh I have to go or the Captain will say I'm slacking off on cleaning again, I'll talk to you soon okay?"
I waved goodbye and realized I was starting to smile again. "Maybe living here won't be so bad" I thought as I finally was allowed to go on my way. After walking for some time I made my way to a forest and the trees seemed to call to me, so I wandered inside hoping for some peace. The air felt clean here, less stifling than most areas inside the walls and I took deep breaths relishing in the opportunity.
Back when I lived in Wall Maria I would constantly run off into the forest to play, I would always get dirty and mom would always scold me but I loved the forest so much and she would always let me go back. I pause as the memories flood back into my mind making my chest heavy. I look up and find a large tree that I decide to climb so that maybe I'd feel a bit lighter. I climb higher and higher into the tree, the ground is so far below me now but that had never stopped me before, I find a branch large enough to lay down on and perch on top of it. I look and in front of me is a glistening lake, I close my eyes and let my legs hang over the edge as I listen to the soft rustling of the leaves in the gentle breeze, the sunlight on my face feels warm and gentle, I take in a deep breath not wanting to forget this feeling. This isn't the forest I knew, however it was enough to bring me back to the days that were now long gone. I got lost in my thoughts as the breeze caressed my body, eventually I noticed that my face was no longer warm, the sun was long gone from the sky and the moon had risen in its place. I must have been there for hours, in the end I was too tired to head back home and decided to sleep on the branch I was on. It was surprisingly large several people could fit up here if they wanted to, it felt so much larger being there alone. I lay back and looked at the treetops above me until I could no longer fight off the temptation of sleep.
