"Filthy once-was." Anger boiled in my veins.
A "once-was" was considered the worst kind of yokai. A yokai who was once human. Among others, I was considered the weakest of the weak, and as some yokai eat humans for lunch, I was considered a good meal gone to waste.
"What did you just say to me?" I said, grabbing the collar of the ten foot tall yokai and throwing him to the ground. Mikage wouldn't let me go by myself if I wasn't qualified.
God knows I've trained my ass off the past fifteen years.
"I am the proud familiar of the land god, Mikage, and I will not allow you taint my master's name by tainting mine." I pull my brother's katana from the sheath on my waist, a sly smile coating my face.
Gods, I've waited for this.
I stand on the yokai's chest, and as anger flashes over his face, a meaty hand shoots out towards me.
It is gone with a slash of my blade.
The hand rolls to the side as the low level screams at the sight of his severed arm.
I jump off the yokai's chest and grab his collar, pulling his face dangerously close to mine. I can smell his horrid breath.
"Next time, I'll take your head." I say as fear flashes over his face.
"Yes, of course." He nods quickly. I turn to walk away, when I hear a yell to my left.
"Panther, turn around!" I turn around just as the yokai's blade comes rushing towards my face. I dodge it quickly, the blade catching a few of my hairs.
I wipe my chin with my sleeve, a smile cracking on my face.
"Don't say I didn't warn you." I say, lunging for the low level amputee. Dodging his attacks easily, I spring myself toward his neck, sinking my blade into it like he was made of butter, and ripping downward until I landed safely back on the ground, an ugly crimson coating my blade.
I look around for the voice that called out my warning, but all yokai around me duck their heads and scurry past me. I wipe the muck off my katana, cursing at the stain of red on the beautiful kimono I was given as a present from Mikage.
"You don't give yokai a second chance." A voice says behind me. "Never turn your back to one, trust me, those kind never learn." The same voice that called out to me chuckles as I turn to him.
The man that stands before me is tall and muscled. The black hair that sits atop his head seems effortlessly messy, and round black ears poke out from the tangles.
He looks like a bear
And nothing like Tomoe, I note.
A lopsided grin greets me, and he extends his hand to me.
"I'm Hirotaka, you can call me Hiro." His extended arm sticks out from a top which he must've cut the sleeves off of. It clings to his frame, which mind you, I'm not complaining about.
The arm that he extends is tattooed from shoulder to elbow, but his hand is soft when I shake it, and his smile is unquestionably welcoming.
"I'm (y/n)." His warm brown eyes meet mine.
"Where you headed? I'll walk you." He offers. I smile.
"Just trying to find a birthday present for my fellow familiar. He's been complaining about getting a new katana for the past few months, so I was thinking I'd get him a new one." I smile at Hirotaka, beaming at the thought that I might've find a new friend.
"Well then we should get going." He says nodding his head toward the market. I follow him.
---
The day ended with a shinny new katana for Tomoe and a new friend for me. I return to the shrine, beaming.
