The Birthday

The gift for Tomoe hidden in my kimono, of course.

"What are you all happy about, and why are you covered in blood?" Tomoe jumps from the roof, landing gracefully in front of me.

"I made a friend." I stuck my tongue out at the stubborn fox as he flattens his ears.

"Doesn't explain the blood." He murmurs to himself.

"I just ran into a rotten yokai and had some help from a passerby, that's all," I shrug.

"Which means you shouldn't be going to the world over yonder by yourself." he says. I sigh.

Busted.

"But Tomoeeeee, pleaseeeeee." I feign a whine and walk past him with a smirk.

"I'm a big girl, Tomoe, I got it covered." Tomoe sighs, following me into the shrine.

However my venture was quickly forgotten at the thought of giving Tomoe his gift, my excitement barely contained the day Tomoe turned 446

"Tomoe! Let's go, I have a suprise for you!" I say, dragging Tomoe with me toward the old well a few miles from the shrine. He rolls his eyes at me, ripping his arm from my grasp.

"We shouldn't leave the shrine unattended." Tomoe says, looking back at it.

"Don't worry, this venture is Mikage approved." I say, still attempting to pull him along with me. he works his hand from my grasp once again and sighs.

"You really are going to be the death of me (y/n)." he says, walking past me. I smile and turn to catch up to him. Excitement bursts from my chest.

"Race you to the well!" I shout, jumping to a nearby tree and transforming mid air. My black paws land on the thick branch and I propel myself forward, leaping from branch to branch.

"To think that I would participate in such a childish activity." he says somewhere behind me. I pause to look back at him. My deep blue eyes scan the ground, but he is nowhere in sight.

Tomoe's smaller fox figure darting past me. A smile plays on my lips as I chase after him from the tree tops.

"Childish huh?" I ask, panting.

"Guess you really have turned me into a child haven't you, (y/n)?" Disbelief courses through my veins.

Since when did Tomoe become this energetic?

"You can't get ahead that easily," I shout after him, leaping as fast as I can from tree to tree. A few hundred feet from the well, I land on a branch and it cracks beneath me. The branch and I fall to the ground in a heap, and I transform back to my human form with the surprise. I immediately check my brother's katana for damage and sigh with relieve when I find it unharmed.

"I swear to the Gods, you are the clumsiest yokai that I have ever met," Tomoe says as he extends a hand toward me. I gladly accept with a laugh as I stand to my feet. I look at Tomoe to see a smirk playing at the side of his lips.

"I see you're amused as ever." I say, hoping that my remark doesn't send him back into the disinterest he showed when I first asked him to follow me out here.

"of course I am, I just beat you." he says, making me laugh. "what did you bring me out here for anyways?" he asks.

"well..." I say skipping toward the well. "Close your eyes and count to ten" I say, slightly amused with myself. He gives me a skeptical look before giving in and closing his eyes,

"One... Two.. Three.." he counts as I jump down the now dry well and retrieve the Katana that Hiro helped me pick out. I jump back up the well, Katana in hand. He must've heard me return because he speeds through eight, nine and ten. He opens his eyes to see me holding out a crimson katana.

"Me and Mikage noticed that your old one was getting pretty old, so we both chipped in to get you a new one for your birthday," I say, placing the katana in his hands. He looks at it will awe, pulling it out of it's sheath and swinging it around.

"So that's why you were in the world over yonder last week." he says looking up at me with a sly smile. "Thank you," I smile at him in return.

"Does this mean that we're friends now?" I ask, placing my hand on my own katana.

"In your dreams." he says, running ahead and transforming into his fox form. I smile and follow him.

Stupid Fox.
