CHAPTER THREE:

THE UNFORGIVABLES

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋

Thursday 2nd, September 1994

The storm had blown itself out by morning, leaving the castle damp but still, the air thick with the scent of wet stone. Inside the Gryffindor girls' dormitory, Aurora stirred awake. The heavy curtains around her four-poster bed swayed slightly as she pushed them aside, revealing the rest of the room's occupants beginning to rise.

Across from her, Lavender Brown let out a sleepy yawn as she stretched, her golden curls spilling over her pillow. "Morning," she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.

Parvati Patil was already up, brushing through her dark hair with careful precision, while Hermione was by the window, glancing outside at the grey sky with a thoughtful expression. Mellen and Wren were already gone.

Aurora swung her legs over the side of the bed and reached for her uniform, neatly folded at the foot of her bed which she presumed was Hermione's doing. The rich crimson and gold of her tie stood out against the dark pleats of her skirt.

She entered the bathroom and locked the door, she pulled off her pyjamas. Aurora glanced at her body in the bathroom mirror, and examined the bruises lining her stomach. She brings her fingertips up and presses into one of them and flinched at the burning sensation. Shaking her head, she pulled on her blouse, buttoning it quickly before slipping into her sweater, the warmth of the wool a welcome comfort in the chill of the room.

"Looks like a dreary day," Parvati remarked as she tied back her hair, slipping on her robes. "Hopefully, Professor Sprout won't have us out in the mud all morning."

"Knowing our luck, she'll think it's perfect weather for something disgusting," Lavender groaned, fumbling for her shoes.

Hermione huffed as she gathered her books. "Honestly, a little rain never hurt anyone. Besides, Herbology is useful."

Aurora fastened her cloak before sitting down on the end of Lavender's bed as the blonde haired girl tied her hair back into a plait. Aurora couldn't do any type of hairstyles, she felt jealous of girls who could. Lavender was always quick to do it for her. "Says the girl who doesn't have to scrub mud out of her robes afterward."

Hermione rolled her eyes. With final adjustments to their uniforms, the girls grabbed their bags and made their way down the spiral staircase, joining the rest of their housemates filtering into the common room. The golden glow of the fireplace was a stark contrast to the dreary skies outside, but the warmth only lasted a moment before they stepped into the drafty corridors of the castle.
