CHAPTER ELEVEN:

SHADOWS AND SCHEMES

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋

Friday 3rd, March 1995.

As March rolled in, the weather became drier, but cruel winds skinned their hands and faces every time they ventured onto the grounds. Letters and parcels were delayed constantly, as owls struggled against the gusts and often ended up far off course.

Aurora had noticed that after lunchtime, Harry, Ron, and Hermione had vanished. Curious, she pulled out the Marauder's Map and watched the trio slip out of the castle, heads bent together in hurried discussion.

Neville spotted her wandering the corridors and came over, hopeful to chat. "Aurora, hey — what are you up to?"

"I'm not up for talking," she snapped, more sharply than she intended.

Neville's shoulders slumped, hurt flashing in his eyes, and without another word, he turned and left. Aurora watched him go, her irritation leaving an uneasy ache in its wake. She wandered the halls alone for another hour, the castle's echoing corridors offering little comfort.

Eventually, she made her way to the Great Hall and sat down at a nearly empty table. She pushed food around her plate, lost in thought, until a familiar voice drew her attention.

"You decided to grace us with your presence," Enzo said, sliding into the seat across from her. His tone was dry, laced with a touch of annoyance.

Aurora raised an eyebrow, not looking up. "Huh."

"You've been avoiding me since the ball," Enzo said, leaning back slightly. "I'd like to know why. You ditched me and then haven't come near me in over three months."

She shrugged, casual, even cold. "Does it matter?"

Enzo blinked, clearly caught off guard by Aurora's sudden mood shift.  "Whoa... okay," he said slowly. "I mean it kind of does matter yeah."

Aurora's gaze flicked briefly toward him, then back to her plate. It was clear — she didn't care, or at least, she didn't want him to think she did.

Enzo sighed, shaking his head. "Commitment issues."

"I'm not exactly here for commitment, Enzo," she replied lightly, voice smooth, but there was a hint of something unspoken beneath it. "Let alone with some boy who's going back to Durmstrang in like a month -- we're not Krum and Hermione..... I've no desire to know you outside Hogwarts."
